Solved IE 11 freezes until graphics are displayed - sometimes

Hi guys. Running 1109600 in W7 Ult 64-bit. Win is up to date; just did an update two days ago. I also updated Adobe Flash yesterday, but the problem I have been having for some time has not gone away. I have done a google search, and found people with freezing browsers, but nothing like what I am having.

Basically, many pages I browse to in IE freeze until certain graphics are displayed. Usually, we are talking ads and ad banners - but not always. The page fully loads in a split second, and then completely freezes, until the graphic becomes visible. I actually see the space where the graphic is about to be displayed - it just appears as empty space. During the freeze, I can not scroll, I can not l-click nor r-click anywhere on the page, but I can close the browser (or the tab), and I can minimize it. Once the graphic appears, it's all fine. The freeze is usually anywhere from 5 sec to 8 sec., and as I said, it's usually ads and banners. I am not trying to get rid of the ads nor stop them from loading; generally, they are small and out of the way and I don't mind them. I am just want them to load with the rest of the page. I don't see the same behavior in FFox. Here is an ex. of what I am talking about:

http://www.jeffreyhayat.com/iefreeze.mp4

See how about half the page loads in literally 1 sec, and the rest takes about an additional 5 sec? This is what happens to me quite often, but usually it's one small ad at the top or side, as opposed to half the page.

There wasn't much I could think to do... Spybot and Malewarebytes found nothing, and an sfc/ scannow found nothing. If I go to Manage Add Ons, the only thing enabled is Shockwave Flash Object. nothing is enabled in Accelerators nor Tracking Protection.

Was hoping someone could tell me where to look next.

Thanks in advance.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

ThrashZone > thanks for the link, but hat has nothing to do with my issue.

This issue does not appear in safe mode.

So, I think I am on to something here. If I go to add-ons, and disable shockwave flash object, I have no issues with pages and ads and ad banners loading. Everything loads in a split sec.

However, when I go to youtube, I get this message:

You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video.
Download it from Adobe.

That just sits at the top of the main page, which is kinda weird, because I am not loading and vids at that point. All vids in youtube, and vimeo play just fine. Vids I have on my personal site do not, however. Tho, I may have an old version of, well.. something. :/

Ideas here? Should I leave the shockwave flash object disabled?

Thanks again.

I have no problems with Flash and IE11 (or IE10 for that matter). The Fedex website that you showed in your video loads just fine. The images that you show loading last also load last for me; but it all happens pretty quick.

What antivirus app are you using?

Also, what happens if you...
...wait for the Fedex website to load
...open a new tab
...load that same Fedex website into the new tab.

Flash should already be loaded into RAM by the first tab. I was wondering if the freeze was due to Flash loading slowly or some antivirus app watching the Flash exe too closely - thus pausing Flash a bit each time that Flash loads.

I dont use an AV app. As for the FedEx page - or any other that takes time to load...opening that same page in a new tab results in the page loading immediately with no stutter.

I tried the speedtest and this is what I have:

Any other ideas? Thanks.

Sorry. I should have answered that question.
I don't know of a way, but I've not looked either.
I keep flash turned on and I use it.

Okay - a bit more testing:
Visit this website:
Adobe - Flash Player
Wait for it to fully load
Flash should be in RAM now
open a new tab
visit a different website that uses flash in that new tab

If you still see a lag on the flash part in the new tab, then it is not from loading flash into RAM.

Okay, so no antivirus app to wonder about.
Do you use a HOSTS file?
Or an IE plug-in that blocks/filters things?

HOSTS file - there is a HOSTS file in my system 32 folder, that contains a lot of text. As far as whether or not it is actively in use... dont know.

Plugs - none that I am aware of. I'll c&p from my op so that we are <pun alert!> on the same page:

If I go to Manage Add Ons, the only thing enabled is Shockwave Flash Object. nothing is enabled in Accelerators nor Tracking Protection.

Visit this website:

I do still see a lag. So, flash is not loading into RAM? Did a googley, but there are so many results that have no bearing to my situation. I tried filtering the results with a - but that didn't seem to give me anything useful. Where should I look? I assume this wouldn't be a BIOS thing... does the HOSTS file factor in? Where else to look? Thanks.

A quick test, disable Hardware rendering if it is being used:

Open IE> Tools> Internet Options> Advanced tab> Check Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering> Apply and OK your way out

Uncheck it again if no help.

Since you started with the Adobe website, then Flash should already be loaded into RAM. Visiting another website that also uses Flash should not cause another instance of Flash to load. The lag that you saw when visiting that second website was not caused by Flash loading into RAM since Flash was already in RAM.

See this post for some more info on the HOSTS File:
http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/319852-strange-looking-host-found.html#post2673012
If the file is dated around 2009, then it is probably the original one and is not blocking anything.

That did it! It was unchecked - I checked it, and now all is well. The ads sometimes take several seconds to load (who cares?) but the browser is not frozen while the ad is loading. Dude - I owe you a beer... thanks so much!

And UsernameIssues > thank you as well for your time!

Cheers.

Well that's great. Usually Hardware rendering works well. If it works well for you this way, you're done. You could try a video card driver update to see if you can get that working, but...if it aint broke...

This tip totally fixed the same issue of freezing webpages for me. Started acting up recently for unknown reasons. I have a fairly modern laptop and good internet connection running IE11 on Windows 7 Home Premium. Thanks for the tips and a great forum!
