Solved Screen goes black for a second then back on without any error messages

Screen randomly goes black then comes back on, no message saying display driver has stopped working. Happens every 10-15 minutes. Fresh install of windows 7 too. Anyone has this problem before? Should I try re-seating GPU?

ok so its not ever 10-15, just went 2 hours without it happening, wasn't doing anything GPU intensive, reading my mail..

The same thing (or nearly so) happened to me, the monitor would go black for just a second or two and then return to normal with no error messages. Very occasionally it would stay black for a longer period, say 10 to 15 seconds. After about 2 weeks of this, the monitor finally refused to turn on at all.

So, in my case it was the monitor.


Here's what I would try:

1. Reseat cable between monitor and graphics card.

2. Reseat graphics card.

3. Try a different cable.

4. Try different ports on the graphics card and monitor.

5. Try your monitor on a different system.

6. Try a different monitor.


I realize that it could be quite a hassle to do all those things and that not everyone will have the necessary equipment but it should narrow down where the problem lies.

Thanks for getting back to me! I've reseat GPU and cables. Monitor is new so I doubt its that. Could be the cable but I don't have a spare atm to try. When I get one i'll see if that helps.

How new is your monitor? As a general rule of thumb, most manufacturing defects should show up within the first 90 days of service.

On the other hand, I have an Asus monitor that developed a problem after 1 year of use. It has an odd glitch or "jump" that happens only when it is connected via the HDMI or DVI ports, it works perfectly when connected to the DisplayPort (hence the suggestion that you try different ports).

Just when I thought the problem was fixed it happend again. Reinstalled drivers etc. Had a game open in fullscreen for 1-2 hours and it didn't occur then, but as soon as I quit I came here and then it happend, maybe a coincidence. Monitor is 3 weeks old.

Only 3 weeks old, eh? Hmm...I would suspect the monitor. Is this an all new system or did you get a new monitor for an existing, working computer?

Can you connect the monitor to another desktop, laptop, netbook, or a stand-alone DVD or Blu-Ray player?

Is it possible to create the blackout by wiggling the cable at either end, lightly tapping on the monitor in various locations, or tapping on the PC?

Does the blackout occur only after resolution changes (such as starting or quitting a game) or will it occur when the PC is sitting idle on the Windows desktop?


If it does turn out to be the monitor, customer support will most likely ask if you have tried a different cable and tried it on a different computer.

I can use it as a DVD player, but sometimes it doesn't happen for hours otherwise I could try and see if its just on the PC channel. I also have a HDMI connector I could try? But like I said sometimes doesn't happen for hours.

No, it doesn't do it doing any of them

That was my original thought, because my monitor "auto adjusts" when resolution is changed so unless its AMD CCC or something else adjusting my res, but it does so it when PC is idle.

It could be that the issue im having in this thread http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/322935-weirdly-low-fps-but-20-gpu.html is the cause of this issue? Apparently my GPU isn't performing to spec..

It might be the 1) TMM service, take a look at: Disable 'Monitor Off' detection, how?

or 2) A buggy GPU driver, try to use an older one.

I have a Sapphire HD7750 silent in my HTPC and I'm seeing a core clock of 800 MHz and a memory clock of 1125 MHz (maximum, it downclocks to 300/150 with no load).

There's something not quite right about your GPU clocks and it very well could be influencing monitor blackout problem.

Wish I could be more helpful but for the moment I'm stumped.

Everyone is :/ nobody seems to be able to help... I've contacted the person I bought the custom built PC off they said to uninstall amd drivers to see if it resets mem clock so obviously they know something is wrong, i've also contacted XFX. Only solution I can see is sending it back. May get this instead MSI Radeon R9 270X Gaming 2GB Overclocked AMD PCI Express Graphics Card - R9 270X GAMING 2G BF4 - Scan.co.uk

That will probably be your best bet, and if you're primarily gaming on this rig you'll be happier with the better performance of the R9 270X.

RMA GPU so if the problem still persists then it's a cable or monitor so i'll try different cable and monitor. Thanks for your help!
