PCI-Z ... PCI-Z is a freeware lightweight system utility designed to provide information about (unknown) PCI (PCI-E, PCI-X...) devices.


PCI-Z is designed for detecting unknown hardware on your Windows based PC. It will help you determine vendor, device and certain details about device even if you don't have drivers installed. Software uses The PCI ID Repository, a public repository of all known ID's used in PCI devices: ID's of vendors, devices, subsystems and device classes. It is used in various programs (e.g. The PCI Utilities) to display full human-readable names instead of cryptic numeric codes.

I discovered yesterday about the best free donationware Audio Converter named TAudioConverter. It the best best free/shareware program for audio format conversion that I have used so far. It can be downloaded from TAudioConverter.

I have come across two programs that should help our investigative techniques.

The first one is a combination of Windows Sysinternals Suite and NirSoft Utilities called Windows System Control Center (WSCC)

WSCC is a free, portable program that allows you to install, update, execute and organize the utilities from various system utility suites. WSCC can install and update the supported utilities automatically. Alternatively, WSCC can use the http protocol to download and run the programs. WSCC is portable, installation is not required.

Requirements:
Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7/2012/8 32/64-bit) WSCC is free for personal and commercial use.

If you scan this program for malware you should find that Sysinternals will not alert you to any positive alarms to malware, but Nirsoft will, please scroll down a bit to "False Positive Issues" on this page About NirSoft Freeware to see Nir Sofer's take on his programs.

This gentleman has been struggling for years (12) to show that his small, but very efficient programs are safe to use.


The second program is PeStudio:

PeStudio is a free tool performing the static investigation of any Windows executable binary. A file being analyzed with PeStudio is never launched. Therefore you can evaluate unknown executable and even malware with no risk. PeStudio runs on any Windows Platform and is fully portable, no installation is required. PeStudio does not change the system or leaves anything behind.

It shows:

• Indicators.
• Virus detection.
• Imports.
• Resources.
• Certificates.
• And a report to allow investigators to analyze unknown and suspicious executable files.
• Finishing up with a prompt line depending on how it is started.

For this second program:
I'm not much of a white hat, meaning that I don't go looking for malware, but anything I d/l'd, I do check before I open it, and haven't found anything suspicious yet.

I've been using WSCC for a yrar now. Every time it updates Norton or Malwarebytes throws up false positives. It's a real nuisance.

I need to test, but I'm curious, have you tried putting WSCC on Norton or Mbam's ignore lists?

I just put the programs on the whitelist when they are detected. I would be interested to hear the result of your test.

And you have to do this every time WSCC updates? It has to be Nirsoft, I wonder what the change is every time or possibly a new program he's created?

It is only if the individual program is updated.

That, would be disconcerting.

I'm under the impression that if you tell a AV scanner to ignore a program it should honor that request no matter what changes are made to update the program.

I have three programs Browser history, pass and wirelessnet view's that I've placed on Mbams ignore list and Mbam remains quiet when I do a full scan.

I wonder if it has to do with the association to WSCC?

I think the problem is that when the program is replaced it is seen as a new object which requires checking.

Probably been quoted before but I have just been using this NCH Software - Thank you for Downloading not the fastest in the world but free and efficient, plus coupled with Shrink really good.

Just watch out for the add on bars when installing and there are a lot of other software below the main link result.

In passing, I note that the link to Winamp is now 404. You cannot download the product any longer from that site. RIP.

The site was closed back in December 2013 I believe, and they are "out of business".

My own recommendation for a super-fine all-purpose outstanding and free audio/video Media Player addition to this list is PotPlayer.

As per usual, any install process should include always taking the "custom" path when offered to UN-CHECK any undesired features, and always UN-CHECKING any adware or other freebies offered and pre-checked if present. This goes without saying.

All correct..

I was simply pointing out that the actual LINK posted in this thread (in post #12) is itself 404, corresponding to the disappearance of the true original official Winamp site that got closed down in December.

So it should be revised to point to an alternative download location that still works (for that final 5.666 version which was made available), or perhaps just removed as an "orphaned" program product no longer being actively supported.
