Printers normally DON'T show in Device Manager because they can be connected by different methods. Windows places these "variable" devices in Devices and Printers. If it doesn't show there, it's not installed correctly. I have the same laser printer but I loaded only the drivers. I didn't want all the extra sh... stuff. Be sure to follow the directions--Load the drivers/software first then plug in the USB cable. The install will tell you when to insert the USB cable.

Hi Carwiz & Mr Whoopee

Opening "Other Devices" in DM shows "USB Controller"

Carwiz, thanks for your ideas. However I have installed and uninstalled the software using various means all with the same result:

In the first instance I installed from disk. I subsequently uninstalled from "programs and features" in Control Panel. I next let Windows detect and install. I then updated the software from the Brother website. This required uninstalling first using the Removal Tool available on the Brother site and then installing the latest driver.

Right now I have the ability to print all my needs, including websites (which the system wouldn't do before) and I am loathe to try another reinstall in case I lose that ability.

I have also installed a Canoscan Lide 600; and again that does not show up in Devices and Printers. I see that your monitor shows up so I guess mine should too, but doesn't. Also have an external hard drive that I guess should be there as well?

I agree bluedog,

I'm changing gears because the printer is working and because there's no device or printer in the Devices and Printers window. None - no device. Plus, Device Manager, view hidden, did not show the printers.

The unknown USB device might come into play, but let's see why Computer doesn't appear in Devices and Printers. Other areas I'd like to explore are Windows Update (WU) & IE 11, some issues specific to Win x64, were resolved with February's Patch Tuesday. I know you use Firefox (FF), but IE is still installed.

Please follow the instructions in OPTION TWO of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Attach the entire CBS.log to a post.

Thanks

Looking at your Speccy (thanks!) I see a few things you might want to address. These are not required changes, only suggestions.

I'm also making notes on Speccy, so after I see the CBS.log, I will provide a next step.

Java: out-of-date. Lots of machines are running fine without Java, if you know you need it, update it and keep it. If you're not sure then uninstall Java and see if anything complains. You can always install it then.

Updaters - Apple, Adobe, Garman, and Google. The only automatic updates I recommend to members are Windows Update and your Anti Virus (AV) update control. Anything else - uninstall and remove scheduled task. This means that you have to establish a periodic routine to manually check those apps for updates.

WU looks like you keep it up to date - good.

Jumpflip might be malware or it might be valid, a quick AV scan will tell more.

Anything Google: as with any recommendation, if you use it - keep it, otherwise uninstall it.

STRONG recommendation: Uninstall SlimDrivers. These types of "utilities" along with Registry cleaners cause problems on many machines. Windows 7 has many good tools and only a few reliable 3rd party tools might ever be required. Do you use or have installed any other such utilities?

You have Windows Essentials (Live) Mail installed and Thunderbird. If you use both, that's ok.... but if you don't use one, then uninstall it.

Nvidia driver update

Back again after a long nap.
Post #5 I didn't follow up on and I should of. That is my bobo.

Carried out Brink's tutorial. Result: "Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log". Unfortunately I am not sufficiently computer-savvy to understand what this means or implies.
Please complete sfc scannow as per the tutorial that Slartybart just posted.

If Windows 7 System Files are not correct many things can be affected. We must have those logs. You post the logs and the forum has people that can read and understand them.

**BlueDog888 have you ever or do you now use Advanced System Care or anything like it?

Thank you all for leaving the ranch and coming to help.

Slartybart:

Please follow the instructions in OPTION TWO of SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Attach the entire CBS.log to a post.

Have run SFC /SCANNOW and get the result "Windows resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"

Regards the CBS.log: alas you are dealing with a less than computer savvy member here. I'm afraid I don't know what you require. I have found something which is supposed to be a CBS log and have copied it to Notepad; but it is huge and full of gobbledegook. As I say I'm not sure if it's what you are after, and I don't want to fill the pages with junk unnecessarily. So, can you run me through how to get hold of and publish the log.

I'm working through your detailed comments arising from Speccy - and believe me, I'm most appreciative of the time and effort you and the other guys have put in.

Hi again Layback Bear. I have used Advance System Care in the past. I'm ashamed to say, like many novices I have been suckered in by promises of goodness from programs offered as Cnet downloads. I ran ASC some time ago and more likely it was run on my old XP computer. Can't dismiss the possibility that it has been used on this machine, though. CCcleaner and Slimdrivers have been used on this machine. I can't recall any others.

My apologies Layback Bear, I missed the tutorial step requiring repeat of the scan. Have done so and now the system is clear with no integrity violations.

Jack: The 2nd SFC bluedog ran showed no integrity violations. Running it again will most likely yield the same.

bluebog should run it again and post the log! Hopefully what ever was repaired is still in the log, otherwise, I'll ask for the persist logs.

bluedog: I just took another look at the DevMgr screenshot. What is CH products above Computer? A quick search shows up game controller(s) and Control Manager software (also for game controllers?)

Anyway, someone will look at the CBS log (or persist log if necessary) and then some simple things
Run the Printer Trouble shooter in Control Panel
click Advanced
click Run as Administrator
You want to let the troubleshooter Apply repairs automatically
Post the "view details" from the results window.

After that? Depends on the other two results.

Thanks

Bill

Ok, this should help

First, my Speccy response post is reading material - don't let that weigh you down. There's nothing you have to do regarding that post - it's information.

Second, the CBS.log

Copy C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
to your Downloads folder

click on the paperclip icon on a post window menu
browse to your Downloads folder
select CBS.log
press the upload button
when it has finished, press close window (upper left)

If the forum complains about the size or type of the file,
create a compressed folder (zip) and put the log in that, then upload the compressed folder.

Full screenshots & upload instructions can be found here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-screenshots-files-upload-post-seven-forums.html

Don't sweat it if you're not computer savvy, savvy? But do remind me when I use unfamiliar terms or techniques. A lot of it is learning how to get the information to members on this side of your monitor.

You'll be a whiz-bang with computers when you get through this exercise. This is one of those issues where you touch a whole lot of things to find a solution. Or.... someone pops in and says: "This tutorial will fix what ails ya" and it does ;)

There are many well written tutorials on SevenForums, I only know a few dozen of them. I have to search most of the time and still can't find the one that another member might post. It's a bit frustrating, but every member is here to help other members.

If ASC is still on the machine - uninstall it to avoid accidental use.
Is slimdrivers a free or purchased application?
  • If it's free, uninstall that as well.
  • If it's purchased, collect the information you need to reinstall it (disc. license key), then uninstall it.

cCleaner is safe enough - leave that on your machine.

The bad news.
If you have run A.S.C on this system their is a very good chance it has changed things that nobody will ever know.
Many people have to do a Clean Install after using A.S.C. by IoBit

Slartybart: Having a couple of problems here.

For the CBS log I get an 'access denied' message at the "CBS" point so I can't copy the log.

For the Printer Troubleshoot, I received a message saying that the printer was not shared with the homegroup. The problem corrected itself; however I can't find any means of posting the result - can't copy the text and there doesn't appear to be any other option but to print the detail.

CH products and CM refer to flight simulator input devices (joystick and throttle). The hardware and software are from a well respected/reputed company and should not cause any problems.

Slartybart & Layback Bear

Where to from here? Guys, I feel concerned about the imposition I have made on everyone's time and all the effort you have gone to. So perhaps it's time to reassess actions from here. The fact is that not only does the printer not show up but all other devices (scanner, monitor, external drive, game controllers) do not show up either. Layback Bear's suggestion that ASC may have had a detrimental effect concerns me and perhaps it would be a good idea to do a clean install at this point. I might say that the computer is now 4 years old and I have thought it timely to do a reinstall anyway (as a matter of routine one of my friends does a clean install annually).

How does that sound as a solution?

It's a pity, though, that the cause could not be found, not just for my own interest but because several other members have reported a similar problem (noted on this forum and other googled sites).

I would do a clean install then load the disk that came with your motherboard for all the hardware drivers. Do NOT add any additional programs, hardware, peripherals or features until the motherboard drivers and Windows are updated. Use the Gigabite site to retrieve updates for your motherboard. It may not mean anything but I have never, in my PC life (30+ years), seen so many "Non-Plug-and-Play" drivers on a system before. And most should be built into the motherboard. It appears to me that the motherboard INF installers were never loaded.

Added: Also clear CMOS memory before the clean install. This resets all the hardware info blocs in the BIOS.

Sounds like a good plan!

Forget about where you were, get where you want to be.

A clean install will certainly resolve this, or any, issue (except hardware).

Don't be concerned about imposing... you're not. Members volunteer their time.

Read the information on the links Layback and carwiz posted
When you've done all of the prep work (backups, finding your disc and COA, downloading your NIC driver(s), etc.) Then follow the rest of the instructions in the tutorial.

I'm sitting out for the duration, you're in good hands with Layback and carwiz.

Thanks All, good to see the response is unanimous, so I'll go ahead with the clean reinstall.

I'll take my time getting my act together and I'll be following the tutorial(s) carefully. Hopefully all will work out OK, but if I have a problem I know where to come for advice.

Again I'd like to thank all players for your patience, time and effort. Icertainly appreciate all you have done.

Cheers,

Bob
