Solved WD hdd in hot swap bay problem.

I have a WD 2tb hdd (Red) in the bay - works fine.

I purchased another one (Green) and upon inserting it, the PC brings up "Explorer.exe server execution failed."

This freezes "My computer" , "Control Panel", etc. Internet works though.

When I called WD after the first one did this, they said it was faulty.

The second one arrived today - same thing.

When I removed the first one from the bay, the problem stopped. - Not today.

I did a System Restore and the problem remains.

Are the WD Greens just garbage?

Based on the eight I've owned with only one failure (the first one; it was one of the early ones that had the head parking issue that has since been fixed), I would say they are not garbage.

This is the second one I tried and got a catastrophic failure.

After calling WD again, they said the Green model is not compatible with the hot swap bay.

I had to do an OS recovery to get back to square one.

What kind of swap bay are you using? I have no problems with my Greens in my swap bay (Antec Easy SATA).

The WD Red works fine and I thought he Green would as well.

The hot swap bay is built-in on top.

Ok, this is odd. That swap bay is probably no different electrically than mine.

First, we need to find out if the Green is actually working correctly. While it's unlikely that two drives in a row will be bad, it still can happen. Do you have an external dock you can use to connect the Green to your computer? Or can you temporarily install it inside your computer?

Well, I installed in in my computer and it is working.

Still don't know why it screwed up my comp when installed in the hot swap bay, but I guess I'll keep it, if you say it is a reliable hdd.

You should have got a Blue if you don't care about power saving. They have a faster RPM and access time.

Only got this for extra storage - had a coupon from Staples.

They matched price on Amazon and my coupon brought it down to $59.00.

I've got 5 other hdds for speed so that it not an issue.

Now that we know the drive is ok, we need to try to figure out why the dock is acting up. Is the SATA port the dock is connected to set for Hot Swap?

As I previously mentioned, I have NO problems with any of my other hdds in the dock.

WD is insistent that this hdd is NOT compatible with the bay.

Ok, can you temporarily swap the port you used with the Green when you installed it in the computer with the port the swap bay uses?

I appreciate your concern, but I'm not going any further with this.

I have plenty of room in my PC and installed it there.

Since all my other hdds work in the bay, that's all I need.
