1600Mhz RAM only showing 1400Mhz?

Just a note guys, Ivy Bridge supports a default RAM of 1600 with no adjustments. Sandy and prior only 1333.

The H series chipsets are limited in what overclocking settings can be made and you have a locked CPU.

To run RAM at faster frequencies usually requires "looser" timings to get it there.

I'm running Ivy and my Corsair Vengeance Defaulted to 1333mhz even with it being 1600mhz support

to my knowledge ram always defaults to the lowest speed until adjusted

Gary ,I know you are more Savvy with Ivy than i am but what i don't get is he should be able to tab the correct speed to 1600 and call it a day

I suggest he takes a snip with speccy to just see what his ram is really running and get the full specs just to be sure we aren't missing anything RAM specs included if you can see what type of Ram is being used maybe it will give a clue to why it is behaving like it is

thanks Gary...at last someone who understands what Iam saying... I have a latest HASWELL board rated at 1600Mhz and 1600Mhz Crucial Ballistix Sport 1.5V RAM but it only lets me switch it from 1333Mhz to 1400Mhz - if this was right then the board would not advertise that its 1600Mhz out the box (as per Ivy-Bridge and Haswell)... it would say 1333Mhz/1400Mhz(OC) am I right Gary? on the description it says 1333Mhz/1600Mhz (must be an Ivy-Bridge+ CPU to support 1600Mhz...of which I posted an image above (and one of my board which demonstrates the OC next too the number meaning you will get those speeds by OverClocking them, e.g. my board (H77M-D3H) says Support for DDR3 2200(OC)/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules meaning 1600Mhz is supported natively.)

also, SolarsStarsShine now you go on about Tabbing it too 1600 and calling it a day which is EXACTLY what ive been saying but youve been going on about FSB and timings?? you say Iam confusing my statements with yours??? look back and you said "Once again you are not overclocking your ram you are fixing the timings".....I can only assume your mentioning of "FSB" and not knowing Ivy-Bridge+ supports 1600Mhz natively that your only knowledge of overclocking is related to older systems only.

this is what went in:
Crucial 4gb Ddr3 1600 Mhz (pc3-12800) Cl9 1.5v Ballistix Sport

the mobo is a Gigabyte H81M-H which is rated for 1600Mhz:
GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1150 - GA-H81M-H (rev. 1.1)

Just to be sure I flashed to the latest BIOS:

GPsQutD.jpg

I used to have a similar H61M board that was £45 and had very tight OC'ing but I could still Tab switch from 1333Mhz (1333Mhz RAM) to 1600Mhz on that... as his can Tab switch to 1400Mhz means it SHOULD tab to 1600Mhz - I didnt have to mess about with timings on my H61M board and cant see why I should on his when the website states it supports 1600Mhz natively.

Gary can you help with this?...please?

well before you get cocky and "cool" all ram moduals have several SPD profiles which even on a haswell board may not run natively at 1600mhz.. enabling the xmp profile usualy overcomes this but not always.. ive built dozens of rigs where ive had to manually do the timing and or enable xmp even on HASWELL chips.. see I can make things stand out too...

so basically everything we told you is still 100% correct regardless of the intel generation you have.. and your understanding of terminology and terms is still incorrect..

but hey im not the one asking for help and or trying to undermine thise helping me.. so what do I know..

im out..

Snadge getting upset won't help. I know it is a PITA when crap doesn't do what you want it to do. :)

Let's see what is going on first. Use CPUz and open the SPD tab, post snip for all slots.

This is the preferred, best way to upload an image or a file to a post.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-screenshots-files-upload-post-seven-forums.html#post93869

Press the ALT and PrntScrn keys at the same time, this will capture only the active window to use in Paint or your preferred graphics editor.

You may also upload a photo or image you already have on your PC, as you would a file, without using the Snipping tool.

Grab CPUz if you don't have it.

What CPU are you using, snadge? I'm using a very similar motherboard, and although it supports 1600Mhz RAM (and the RAM itself is good for 2400) I have no way of removing the 1400Mhz limit and going any higher than that. Although I have a Haswell CPU, it only supports 1333Mhz RAM.. I believe this to be the cause.

Either way.. I have a very similar motherboard and I understand the trouble that you're having.

Exactly what processor are we talking about?
I believe the Haswell comes locked which allow a little bump with the ram but not much and a unlocked Haswell.

@ BOATWONG, think your onto something there...I gave up on this thread as it become an 'argument'

but... the CPU is a Haswell Pentium G3220 which is rated for 1333Mhz...maybe this is the issue, the mobo is rated for 1600Mhz, the RAM is 1600Mhz...but only does 1400Mhz max, ive not been over to my friends house to get screengrabs etc, he isnt to bothered about it as it wont make a bit of difference in real world usage for what he uses the comp for (browsing, skype and watching movies)...it was just the principle that the mobo is rated for 1600Mhz and I cant multiply it past 1400Mhz ....unlike my mobo which does and also has a locked Ivy-Bridge CPU ...but mine is a 3470 which is rated 1600Mhz...

thing is you would think that it would still let you OC to 1600Mhz because its all run off the 100Mhz BCLK anyway, why stop at 1400Mhz?

oh well I guess thats the answer

Snage, why not do what Britton30 said and post screenshots of the CPU, Memory and SPD tabs. The board supports 1600 ram, but does the CPU? If the CPU does not, it is called overclocking as far as the CPU is concerned, as far as the ram is concerned it is not overclocked. The memory controller is on the CPU, not the board. Your limitations may be with the CPU not the board. Normally the timings are different for 1333 than they are for 1600, so you need to change the timings, maybe the voltage and the frequency, but CPUz as Britton30 points out will tell us that. I have 2400 MHz ram and on first startup mine defaulted to 1333, once I changed the timings, frequency and Dram Voltage, it ran at it's specs. It is overclocked as far as the board and CPU are concerned, but not as far as the ram is concerned. Look at what we are saying. Mine is 2400Mhz ram, but it can run at different speeds. But, you will notice each speed it can run at, has different timings and voltage.
SPD.JPG
So, you see the first setting is what my board started at 9-9-9-24 @1333 1.5V
As soon as I set the timings to 10-12-12-31 and the frequency to 2400 and the voltage to 1.65 this is what it is currently running at. Notice the last XMP JEDC from the SPD tab

Sigh. Seems that people are still presuming that you are brainless and don't know how to OC or configure some memory. I felt your pain when reading earlier replies; that's why I replied in the first place :).

2014-05-13 20.51.37.jpg

I also have a G3220. When the BCLK is fixed and all we have are the options above, what do they expect us to do?

Using the MSI/Intel Extreme tuning utility I was able to get past this boundary and try some higher frequencies, but absolutely no config over 1400Mhz would boot; regardless of voltage and timings. Picture of the unlocked utility below:

w3v643v6.png

This might be something that we just have to live with when using this CPU. Next thing I'll try is a set of memory with a specific 1600Mhz xmp profile, that's also on the memory support list (if there is one..).

I can live with a few lost Mhz, but only because I was able to reuse memory from an old system. If I'd paid for a set specifically for this system and forced to handicap it, I'd be a little pissed.

at the end of the day you have a budget cpu.. no matter the memory speed it will always be the bottle neck.

you wont see any difference in day to day computing and gaming between 1333mhz and 1600mhz.

youll only see gains in extremely high ram consuption applications such as video editing... but again the cpu will hold it all back way beforw that becomes noticeable.

If only we'd been mind readers and known what CPU was in the machine in the first place eh?

Doesn't take a mind reader to read, think, and give a real answer. All this turned into was a patronization party.

If you don't have experience of the fault, you don't need to immediately presume that the person experiencing it doesn't know what they're talking about.

Most CPUs are rated for memory at an unusually low frequency, but in reality will clock a lot higher on the most basic motherboards. All this thread needed was a reply from someone with experience of exceptions; to say that is isn't always about the motherboard, memory or user.

Perhaps before you come on a thread and start criticizing everyone, you should read the thread first.

The memory controller is on the CPU, not the board. Your limitations may be with the CPU not the board.

I got lost in going through a the graphs and things posted by boadwong thinking it was snadge.

Does snadge have a unlocked Haswell and what is the exact cpu number.

If I have missed this information in the mush of the all I'm sorry.

From my post #26.
I'm I missing something.
Exactly what processor are we talking about?
I believe the Haswell comes locked which allow a little bump with the ram but not much and a unlocked Haswell.

If only we'd been mind readers and known what CPU was in the machine in the first place eh?

Doesn't take a mind reader to read, think, and give a real answer.

Real answers were given relevant to the information provided. If people don't provide all relevant information how can they expect pinpoint help?

He has a G3220. I posted mine because I have the same issue as him, with the same CPU, and he was unable to get screengrabs... not to hijack the thread.

Perhaps before you come on a thread and start criticizing everyone, you should read the thread first.

The memory controller is on the CPU, not the board. Your limitations may be with the CPU not the board.

Way to select that short section out of a ~1k character post. The rest was unnecessary; if you read all previous posts, and more importantly, the OP.

The g3220 as I stated earlier is an extremely budget cpu its basically a rebrand ir a rebrand and just carries hazwell by name.. its max memory speed is 1333mhz.. that processor will be the weakest link in any pc..

so regardless of "the issue" which isnt an issue its just the limitations of budget components. cant have it all on a shoe string.
