Hello,

Last Tuesday (20/05/2014) when I arrived home I had a surprise with my PC. The screen was "scrambled", and the machine was stuck and non-responsive. I had to reset it. When it rebooted, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware started to update to version 2.0 and completed its update. It made a quick scan and everything was clean. However a strange thing happened: MS Security Essentials popped-up with the red icon and saying that the computer was at risk. Next the explorer crashed and a BSOD showed (STOP 0x000000F4). This was a very strange thing as I have not installed/removed any hardware/software (besides the update that started after resetting). I reset once again. The computer booted again and after everything had loaded all seemed to be OK. I was preparing to play League of Legends (had double-clicked the shortcut on desktop and the window with the “Play” button showed, however even before I started the login to the game process the same thing happened all over again: MS Security Essentials followed by explorer and same BSOD. This was weird.

I restarted in safety mode and run a full system check with both Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and MS Security Essentials. An Obscure java Trojan/virus/malware popped-up. I cleaned it and reboot again in normal mode. Meanwhile I ran a checkdisk without any errors. No more alerts and no more BSOD. Everything seemed to be working just fine.

However when I tried to run League of Legends, it simply did not start. The loader started but it wouldn’t launch the window of the game. I checked the process at the Task Manager and it was only 120KB and the explorer.exe increased its memory/cpu use (I have the Core Temp app running on the mini apps and it showed that all the processors were having high activity) but nothing happened. When I try to kill the League of Legends launcher process it simply would not ended. Also tried to kill explorer.exe without any success. Tried to end session and tried to shut down but, at first it did not work and staid stuck at the closing session screen/shut down screen (only with reset I could restart the computer), now it already ends session/shuts down/restarts without any problem. However the last couple of times, I noticed that the network icon by the clock had a blue circle on it as it was starting/connecting. That never happened before. I tried to double click it – nothing happened. Tried to go to the Network and Sharing Center via the Control Panel, but it simply does not open and gets stuck trying to open. When I go to the Task Manager, select that application, right click it and go to process it selects explorer.exe on the processes tab. I try to terminate it but without any success.

In my attempts I also tried to make a system restore to an earlier date, but as the problem persisted, I reverted the restore.

Apparently everything is working fine (internet access/speed, running office aplications, flash content, java content).

Everything is up to date.

Can anyone help me with this situation? Can this be a virus/trojan/malware? I have ran out of ideas here... :(

If however you would like to ask for malware help, and want to just look into that option then do the following:

1.) Download herdprotect: (choose the portable version)

Download herdProtect - Free Anti-Malware Platform

2.) Run the scan.

3.) When the scan finishes, save the results per the screenshot below. Then upload the log here.

DO NOT REMOVE ANYTHING YET. I will advise if anything needs removed when I receive the log.

First I want to thank you for the time you are taking on trying to help me.

In attachment I am sending you the log from the scan. It said that it had to perform another analysis on the items it found.

Will be waiting for any news (hopefully good news...)

Remove the following with herdprotect. To remove a item, click the item then choose action-remove.

Its honestly not as bad as it looks. They are all adware, not really bad stuff so far.

Run a fresh scan with herdprotect once the items have been removed and you restarted the pc.

Then upload a fresh new log.

Good. Log looks good.

One entry concerns me though, do you have a webcam? You have some sort of software called fixcamera installed. Have you heard of it? Is it installed on your computer under uninstall a program? Its under c\windows which is a odd location. Looking it up does not indicate strongly if it is malware or not.

If you don't have a webcam, delete the entry in herdprotect to be on the safe side. The fact that the publisher is not filled out is a cause for concern as well. All the signs point to malware....but I am honestly not sure on this one. If you have a webcam though, it might explain something.

Yes, I have a Logitech webcamera installed on my computer. But I honestly do not know if I have installed this program or not. Just to be safe I will remove it.

When I get home I will try to run programs/applications I was having trouble with and I will post back an update of the situation. Thank you once again.

Unfortunately I’m still having the same problem with League of Legends. I uninstalled it, downloaded the most recent version and tried to reinstall it. However when I tried to do that the same thing happens: the application does not start (not even asking permission to start the install as it usually happens when you try to install any program). Like that, I restored the system to the point it was before uninstalling it.
I can already access the network and sharing center. :)
In attachment I put the CBS log after have ran the SFC /SCANNOW command and the checkup.txt files.
As the CBS log file is more than 2MB, I am attaching it as a zip file.
Hope you can find something that can solve me this problem… thank you once again for all the help both of you are giving me.

I am going to have someone look at your cbs log, as for things you can do right now:

-Uninstall adobe reader
-Uninstall Java.

These programs are huge security risks, and for the most part are completely unnecessary. Web browsers can open pdf files just fine, and java is almost never needed.

You can always install it when you do need it, then uninstall it later. Malware likes to target these 2 programs a lot.

You have google chrome installed. If you use that as the main browser you can also uninstall adobe flash, as adobe flash is built into google chrome. So therfor you do not need the plugin.

This indicates that there are also problems with the servicing files, which are best fixed first using CheckSUR -

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

I have run the CheckSUR tool.

I am uploading the CheckSUR.log, the checksur.persist.log and the CBS file (in .zip) that was also created during this process.

Thank you for all your time.

Note: I ran the CheckSUR while the process that loads the League of Legends was "running", e.g., I have double clicked the shortcut on my desktop and it did not load and I was not able to kill it on the Task Manager. I don't know if this important or not.

Note 2: I have restarted the machine. When everything was loaded, the mini-applications did not show up (I have Core temp, weather, calendar on my desktop).

This computer was assembled on 28/03/2012.
All main components are new except for:
- case
- PSU
- Graphics Card
- 1954GB Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166 ATA Device (SATA) [used for storage]
- 160GB Maxtor Maxtor 6 SCS [used for storage]
We got lucky - CheckSUR managed to fix all the errors that I could have hoped for.
There are still the missing payload files to worry about...

I've uploaded a file - amsaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\amsaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\amsaa
or
DIR E:\amsaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\amsaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

I did everything you said. Here is the latest CBS.log.

Please let me know if we have good news. :sarc:

One thing I have notice: when I ended my session and logged in again, I was not able to access some of the Control Panel functions. The window would stop responding although I could continue to use the system normally. I just couldn't get to that particular window.
