Random BSOD, error 0x101

Okay so it didnt do anything after 2 hours so I manually rebooted it. Tried starting windows normally but got a BSOD again. This time i recorded it.

It says "UNBOOTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME".

Googled it a little and inserted my Windows DVD. Had a hard time booting on it, even when priority was set on the Disc, it kept booting Windows and ask me to go in recovery or boot normally. I had to disable my drive in the Bios in order to boot from the DVD.

So once in the menu, I selected "Repair your computer" then this message pop'd: "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair."

It is a genuine DVD.

What is next?

Managed to reach Safe Mode, but it wont boot anyway. It simply reboots after loading the drivers. Same for "Last Good Config".

Nothing does it.

My Windows 7 is installed on its own partition. If I ever have to Format.

It says "UNBOOTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME".
Unbootable or unmountable?

Can you take a camera snap of the BSOD screen and upload it here? We need a confirmation that it is a stop 0xED or not, so that we can start troubleshooting?

Do you have access to another computer right now? If so, do two things .... none of those will need to boot into windows.

Test the HDD using Seatools for DOS.

Download Partition wizard Bootable CD (the last one in the link). Burn it in a blank CD or in a USB flash stick.

Boot into Partition Wizards GUI following this instructions. When you are on the last screen, take a camera snap of the screen and upload the snap here.
Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

We need to see the partitions and parameters.

Let us know the results.

If it has been a Seagate or Maxtor HDD, Seatools would have attempted to recover those errors. But Seatools cannot repair a Western Digital HDD.

It is also doubtful that for how long the disc will go good if it is repaired.

Time to get a new disc.

Well if the disk drive itself is failing, which it is then formatting windows won't make any difference because it's the drive itself.

You might be able to save some data on the drive if you can manage to boot into windows and attempt to back somethings up but from how it looks, I can't say there's much hope.

Sometimes the luck is hard, mate!

But as it is only 6 months old, it is rightly under warranty. Claim for a replacement right now.

When you will lodge the claim for replacement to your vendor, they will not be as astonished as you are. Because they know what and why.

Is there anyway to recover my stuff on it? Cant I just format the Windows Part?
Try to understand the situation. You are having an unmountable boot volume issue which itself means the disc on which the boot records are stored are not being mounted for some reason. We tried to search for the reason and found that the disc itself is bad.
Unfortunately there is no way to attempt a recovery to a corrupt WD disc. Plus, the most important thing is, a disc within warranty should not be recovered but replaced using warranty.

About data recovery, there are some ways that you may try. The easiest option is using a windows installer disc or a windows repair disc. If you have either, follow http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html

Another nice way that may be attempted is using the Partition Recovery Wizard of the Partition Wizard bootble CD.

Okay, so I am in the Windows Repair Disk . My computer did a scheduled Backup last sunday. If I copy those files on my other drive, along with other stuff, how effective would be the recovery with that?

Using the repair disc following the Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console, you attempt to copy the files and folders those you want to salvage.

If you want to restore the data backed up using any backup tool, better you install windows in any other disc (obviously disconnecting the failing disc), install the backup program there, attach the failing HDD back and attempt to restore the data.

It was a Windows System Backup. Do I need any 3rd party program in order to back the files up once Windows is reinstalled on another drive?

How great are these backups? I mean, are all single files, like videos and such, backed up or should I cut/paste as much stuff as I can on an external drive before reinstalling Windows?

I will do what I can. From there, I will buy another drive while waiting on the warranty claim. Should I buy an SSD to run Windows only? Would it be a good thing to do? Having Windows 7 on its own drive and my stuff on others.

If so, what SSD would you recommend me to buy? I never used an SSD.
Thank you

Buying an SSD to put Windows on is a pretty good idea, given that your computer will boot a lot quicker then using all your programs on a HDD. You only need a 120GB SSD, install Windows on it and any other really important programs that you might want.

SSDs vary, there is no best one as they all have their ups and downs as well as bad batches.
Samsung is a good choice in my opinion.
