Solved Microsoft Office 365 Installation and run Error 0xc0000142

I built a new computer this month and a couple of weeks ago I installed Office 365 with absolutely no problems. Today I uninstalled Office in the hopes that I could move it off my off SSD and on to my HDD. Turns out I don't think that's possible, but the real problem is I cannot get it to work at all anymore.

I log in online and enter my product key to install, download the 32 bit installer (which is recommended even for 64 Bit windows) and begin the install. As soon as the installation reaches 52% the following error message pops up:



If I close it it comes up again, and again. About 25 times. Then it stops appearing. It almost seems as if this error doesn't affect the installation because if I don't close the error message the percentage of the installation continues.

Once Office finishes installing none of the components will run. Not Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Onenote, Outlook or any executable in the installation folder at all.

The error message displayed for all of them is the same code:



I have spent about 5 hours today searching forums for advice on this issue and have made no progress whatsoever. Here are the things I have tried so far:

1. Clean uninstalling with this Microsoft fix-it and reinstalling.
2. Reinstalling with Firewall off.
3. Reinstalling with Antivirus off.
4. Installing this Hotfix.
5. Cleaning the registry.
6. Command Prompt SFC/scannow.
7. Quick repair via control panel.
8. Online repair via control panel.
9. Starting Word in safe mode with "winword /safe".
10. Setting "Wake on Magic Package" to Disabled via device manager for my Network Adapter.

I need to go to bed soon, so I will have to stop troubleshooting for now. Tomorrow I am going to try a clean boot as well as Chkdsk.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just tried clean boot, same error.

I also finished running checkdisk on both my drives, no issues.

I'm pretty stuck at this point.

A final effort would be to wipe and reinstall windows but I just finished installing all my programs on this computer that were on my old machine. Starting from scratch again would just be ridiculous.

I fixed it!

Here is exactly what I did:

1. Used Regedit to set Default windows install location as shown here.
2. Started my PC with a clean boot.
3. Turned off Windows Firewall.
4. Installed Office.

I think the problem was that I had recently changed the default install location of windows to my HDD instead of my OS SSD. When I changed it back to default (my SSD), everything worked fine again.

Just goes to show, be careful what you change in the registry.

Well done -- next time though :

Installing to another drive should really be done via IMAGING if cloning an existing system = then using the BIOS change the default boot drive. After that you can delete / wipe the old HDD. Things like FREE MACRIUM will work.

Can't understand why you'd want to move windows FROM an SSD to an HDD - usually it's the other way around.

You only need a smallish partition for windows and pgms --if you've got a single large partition split it and keep your USER DATA (Photos, docs, music etc) on a spearate partition. Your Windows partition shouldn't even for a large installation be more than around 55 GB - so even a small SSD will be OK for Windows.

Office 365 should be downloaded and installed on the (C) Windows 7 partition.
Is that correct?

You are completely misunderstanding me.

I was not trying to move windows, I was trying to move Microsoft Office, which I am no longer going to try to do.

Yes, but I didn't want that because its taking up space on my SSD that could be used for games.

It turns out I don't think there is really any easy way to move Office to another hard drive so I'm not going to bother. Caused me all this trouble already.
