Do I need to install previous updates before SP1 install?

Finally getting around to doing the SP1 upgrade, but I wanted to know if I need to install any of the updates listed for my machine (I have about 30 since my last update installation) before the SP1. Thanks.

If SP1 is offered to you, no, it needs to be a stand alone install. Afterwards run Update again to get the rest.

That's what I was suspecting. So any updates that I would otherwise have needed to "get to" SP1 are already part of the SP1 installation, yes?

SP1 includes any updates that were released before the service pack appeared.

You can either use Windows Updates to install it or you can download and install the standalone version.

Well, it took about an hour but it seemed to go smooth as silk. I did sfc / scannow and ran the SRUT before installing the update. Just got back in after the reboot and it looks okay. Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way.

Pleased to hear it.

An hour is about the right timescale. Did you get an onscreen message after the restart stating the the SP1 installation had been successful?

You can also check under System Properties to confirm SP1 has been installed.

The next day after I got the SP1 update successfully installed, Windows Update had 119 items! I had 11 from 2014 the day before, and they were all Office updates. Some older than the SP1 published date itself. A few were from 2011. My question is, do I need to install the updates with older published dates than SP1? Thanks.

Yes - the SP1 update is itself dated around November 2010 so all updates after that time are relevant.

Sorry, I may have confused. The 2014 Office updates I referred to were part of the 11 updates I had listed before I installed SP1. No indication that they were part of SP1. I should mention that my SP1 update was for win7 64 bit?

Nope - Office Updates are a law unto themselves in many ways.

Apart from anything else there's a possible 5 versions of SP1 for Office that you could be installing in Windows 7 - without even thinking about the bit-count! (Office XP, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013). They all work (although XP can be a bit flaky on some things.)

The release date for Windows 7 SP1 according to MS is February 22, 2011
The date it was released to manufacturers was early Jan 2011 - although the date for most of the files in the release is in November 2010.

I can think of nothing that had an SP1 release around March 3013

Of course I can't verify now, but I really remember the update being shown as 3/19/2013 on my screen. I even wrote it down while I was having vague, undefined update failures on SP1. Oh well, it doesn't matter. You answered my question. Thanks.

Oh, I forgot to mention that my SP1 update didn't even show up on the list till I had completed all updates through 2013. I do them in groups by dates.

I installed Windows 7 Pro/64 Nov. 2013.
KB976932 is dated 11/20/2010 as of now.

That's probably the installation date, rather than the release date.
