Solved Sfc, windows update, inline repair all fail

I used Windows Easy Transfer to back up my files from the corrupted installation. I then did a format and clean Win 7 install. I tried to run Windows Easy Transfer on the new image so I can restore my data and it threw the error shown. My hunch is I may have disk errors. Going to run gsmartcontrol and will post the results. Thanks.

You should indicate what you intend to do before you do it. I'm not familiar with Windows Easy Transfer. Some backup programs require that you use the backup program to restore your backups. If your backup was corrupted, then you're likely to get a error when you attempt a restore. I would have just copied the data files to another drive or flash drive.

You should answer all the questions posted so that we have a better understanding of what you are dealing with. Also, you should fill out your system specs in detail.

Also, let us know what suggestions posted you have followed or not followed. Ask for clarification if something is not clear.

Who's the manufacturer of your hdd?

Not thinking the backup is corrupted. I cannot get the Windows App Windows Easy Transfer to even run. This is a G72 HP laptop running a Hitachi HDD.

Your System Specs indicated a desktop. That's the kind of information needed to assist you. You should inspect the fan or cooling solution and clean it if need be. Your Windows Logs indicated a significant thermal event which usually indicates you need to clean the dirt and dust from your system.

Your backup may be corrupted.

Check the Hitachi website for hdd utilities.

When you're ready to follow the tutorial steps I will support your install. It has never failed or had a single complaint in tens or thousands of installs we've directly helped with here or over a million who have used it on the web.

Until then I have no idea what else you've done to affect the install adversely, csuch as the handling of drivers and updates which steps are so critical to get right they are printed in red

Once you've inspected, tested and cleaned your hardware and install media, I recommend you follow the clean install tutorial explicitly as gregrocker suggests. Also, let us know what programs you don't have the discs for. I'm sure someone can help you come up with a solution.

I finally got it all to work. I did a low-level format of the drive, took about 2 hours. After clean Win 7 install, everything seemed to work, including Windows Easy Transfer. My hunch is the low-level format actually marked bad disk sectors. Thanks for all your help, please close out my ticket.

If you haven't done so, you should install the GSmartControl utility and review the hdd S.M.A.R.T. data and run all the self-tests. GSmartControl will give you the indications of a failing hdd before it reaches a threshold to where other indications are visible. If your hdd is showing the early signs of failure, not just reallocated sectors, but other indications, you should replace it.

You, as the OP, should mark the thread as solved.
