How to set priority for task manager to open before other applications

Hi all,

I want to know if there is a way to set Task manager (Windows 7 64bit Home edition) to have priority to open when another app is hogging start up. I suspect it is Kaspsersky doing a scan at the time I want to open Task manager and this is what is gumming up the CPU, although the CPU use is displayed it only shows that there is minimal percentage being used (11% approx ) but still Task manager is unresponsive.

I find it infuriating that Task manager will actually open but it is unresponsive and only shows the basic info and consequently does not allow you to see processes from all users until whichever process/app stops hogging all the CPU.

Call me paranoid but I can't help think of the possibility of a virus blocking Task manager opening to allow it to do it's dirty work before being discovered??? Is this "normal" behavior for task manager or do I have to be concerned. It would really help if I was able to open Task manager no matter which app was running.

I've just noticed when pulling up msconfig that I now have on start up a program called " Onboard " which I didn't consciously download or start up and on searching the net have discovered it's an onscreen keyboard.

I didn't download this as I already have Virtual keyboard in "Kaspersky Internet Security 2013". Now I'm really getting paranoid that my systems been compromised. Does anyone have any ideas about this and the first steps to take apart from KIS scan, as obviously it's already got through the barbed wire!

Yes, it's possible for an infection [not necessarily a virus] preventing running some things such as regedit, msconfig, etc. Most of the things that get blocked are those that will help in cleaning it up, infections don't want to let themselves be killed.

Some antivirus/antimalware programs want to get their work done before allowing other programs run to assure they are clean.

Hi all,

You can use the free MS Sysinternals Process Explorer utility.
It will list all processes from all users.
It even has a Start Time column available so you can have the list sorted by that.
