Windows 7 Antivirus poll.

Are you one of those who were fed up with the Norton system resource tax? I can assure you this is a thing of the past! :D
Not only that. It is impossible to get rid of! spent hours once on figuring out how to get it all deleted. It took 3 frickin hours!!!!!! but now i know what to do.

While Norton performance might be a thing of the past, I'm not likely to use it since it costs money, I don't pirate software and there are plenty of free alternatives which meet my needs.

See Norton isn't all that bad, it taught you something that you didn't know. How to remove its product. :)

I like ESET, as it is one of VERY few 64-bit anti-virus programs. I tested it out, too, and it found everything I threw at it, including some known false positives. It is also quite lightweight.

One thing I do not do, as it is unnecessary, which is to install entire security suites. They tend to be constantly nagging you, forcing you to make decisions, and being interruptive in ways that YOU, the user, have to figure out. lol...

And figure out is what most people of course won't do, so whose at fault again? The big, bad Microsoft. It always comes down to Microsoft when people are too stupid to operate a computer.

Bottom line, you don't need anti-malware/spyware, etc. software while you're playing with the wolves that lurk everywhere when you go online. Vista's firewall was great, and Windows 7's (with advanced security), is likely just as reliable. That's all you really need.

Back to virus scanners: I'm using eset now, but uI've also used 32-bit virus apps, such as AVG (the free edition), which honestly is just fine.

Unfortunately, the most important component of any software is what you can't buy, but it's also free! Common sense. ;)

McAfee (http://beta.mcafee.com) is the best. It's lightweight and has 'cloud' active protection (codename "Artemis") or full online heuristic detection. All antivirus will delete infected files but McAfee can clean most of them.

Mcafee beta still has some false positives and its missing many features. I will hold on till the final release.
