Chrome just updated and now all I get is "aw snap"

I just started Chrome a few minutes ago and it must have updated because my firewall (online armor) asked if I want to allow Chrome, which it asks when the .exe changes after an update. When I clicked allow, Chrome opened and gave the "aw snap" page and all my extensions crashed. Clicking re-load just makes it crash again. Balloons keep popping up saying "click this balloon to reload this extension", and if I click them, the extensions immediately crashe and the balloons pop up again. My home page won't load, all the extensions crash, and I can't even access my settings. Any idea what just happened? I rebooted my PC and ran ccleaner which I use regularly anyways and still the same thing happens. Firefox is running fine, which I'm using currently.

None of that helped. I've done nothing different with my antivirus, firewall, etc since the last time I used Chrome a few hours earlier. I ran a virus scan and nothing was found. I can't disable extensions because Chrome won't even open the settings page. I also tried renaming the "Default" folder and letting Chrome create a new default folder - it created a new folder but still crashed just like before. So I deleted the new folder and renamed the original default folder back since it has all my extensions, settings, and bookmarks, etc.

I have no idea what happened but Chrome is now unusable and I didn't do anything - I just opened it and it crashed and now it won't work. I have all my extensions set up just the way I like so I really hate to lose it all and uninstall it. Is there anything else I can try?

Okay I could really use some help here please.

I gave up and uninstalled Chrome and ran CCleaner. I also checked to make sure my appdata folders were removed along with the program files folder (which they were). I then installed a brand new just-downloaded version of chrome, and the same thing happened as soon as it started for the first time - "aw snap!'.

I really have no idea what to do now. At this point I can't even use Chrome and I have no idea what it did to itself yesterday. Why does a brand-new just-installed version of Chrome crash like this? Can somebody please offer any help on what to do here?

Fresh install of Chrome but it just says "aw snap" when loading

I'm starting a new thread becasue at this point it's technically a new issue as I'm trying a new install. I had a problem yesterday where Chrome updated and ever since it won't work - it just loads and then says "aw snap". Here is the thread where I posted the issue:

http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers-mail/344203-chrome-just-updated-now-all-i-get-aw-snap.html

So today I gave up and uninstalled Chrome, then I checked to make sure all Google and Chrome folders were gone in program files and appdata. I ran CCleaner. I rebooted my pc. Then I installed a fresh version of Chrome, just downloaded. It installed, then when it started it did the same thing - "aw snap". Chrome is now broken on my PC and I have no idea what happened to cause this. I've done nothing out of the ordinary between when it was working yesterday and when it updated yesterday evening.

Can somebody please help me figure this out? Currently I cannot use Chrome at all and I have no idea why.

Hi,

In post 2 on the other thread i suggested a link for you to look at.

You said:

Did you try turning your Anti-Virus / Firewall off temporarily as a test, i understand you haven't changed anything but Google Chrome updated which means there has been a change... maybe something in the updated version of Chrome is conflicting with your AV or Firewall.

Regards,
Jamie

I said in the other thread that I tried all of those things. It's the same anti-virus and firewall I've been using for years, but just to be safe I did disable both of them. It didn't have any effect.

Not much of a solution - "try another browser". ;)

Personally I use Firefox as my main browser. However, I do have issues with certain things in Firefox (Youtube is permanently broken on Firefox and I have no idea why - can't see the time on the progross bar, video goes dark when I hover over the bar to skip to another point in the vid). For some things I much prefer Chrome, and my girlfriend hates Firefox and strictly uses Chrome.

I can't believe nobody else has ever had this happen and knows what to do about it. Not using Chrome anymore is not an option. Even though Chrome is completely uninstalled, including all app folders, something must obviously be left behind somewhere that is screwing up a new install. I've been using Chrome for years without any issues until 2 days ago - now it's completely broken to the point I can't even install a new version. There must be a solution.

EDIT: I just tried again to install a fresh copy of Chrome and again the same thing - a brand new install with no extensions and it still just says "aw snap". Unbelievable.

Also - this is weird. The Chrome I've always been using had the .exe in:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

now the new install has the .exe here:

"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"

Why would the .exe be in a different location now?

ALSO - I tried using --no-sandbox as suggested in the above link to disable the sandbox, and that didn't work either. I also tried --incognito, and athough the first window opens and says "you've gone incognito", the first couple extensions that try to load (Avira adds the new extension automatically) crash as usual in an endless cycle of balloon popups, so extensions don't load. And I cannot access the Chrome settings - selecting "extensions", "settings", "about Google Chrome", or anything else from the menu opens a new window that says "aw snap". So Chrome is 100% unusable. I really need to get this solved.

Is there something that specifically cleans all the remnants of old chrome installs from the registry, etc. where junk may be left behind? There must be something left behind somewhere causing a new install to crash like this.

Just now my firewall told me Google Update wanted to connect to the internet. Why? Chrome wasn't open so there's really no reason I can see that it wanted to run. I allowed it hoping things would improve. Nope - Chrome still crashes as soon as it starts up.

I don't use Chrome but that's probably a background process checking for updates on a certain interval. Avira has no firewall, has it? Windows firewall default configuration allows all outbound connections.

I think you should take a second look at the 3 links I posted before. There were lots of other advice than to just disable the sandbox.

Chrome is in the process of rolling out their 64 Bit browser, this will eventually replace the 32Bit version on all compatible systems. there are known issues with the 64 bit version and older plug-ins - and I mean old, these are the old Netscape API ones.

It could be that the update you have is the 64 bit version and is not compatible with your system

There are stand alone installers available which I believe are the 32Bit

https://support.google.com/installer/answer/126299?hl=en-GB

The 64 bit offline installer is here - if it's a bad standard download causing your issue

Google Chrome 64-bit

Various versions are also available Here

Official Link to Download Google Chrome Full Standalone Offline Installer - AskVG

Hopefully one of these will get you working again :)

Your awesome for reading this.

Thanks - I tried all of those installers - both 32bit installers installed but both times Chrome still wouldn't run properly - "aw snap". The 64bit wouldn't complete the install on my 32bit system.

Try booting to Safe Mode with Networking and see if Chrome will launch there

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/69585-safe-mode.html

If it launches there, try a clean start to see if there is a conflict

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html

I understand this happened after a Chrome update, but something is obviously amiss. Do you have a system restore point from before this began?

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html

A Guy

Sadly no restore point - well not from before this started happening anyways. This makes zero sense to me. Something is most certainly wrong here. Could there be some hidden leftover in the registry after uninstalling it? It must have corrupted itself after it updated but how can it still be corrupted if I uninstalled it and reinstalled with new installers?

I haven't tried running it in safe mode so I'll give that a shot in the morning. I have no idea what to try next after that.

Also - this is weird. The Chrome I've always been using had the .exe in:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

now the new install has the .exe here:

"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"

Why would the .exe be in a different location now?

I believe Barman described the issue very well here,
http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers...pdated-now-all-i-get-aw-snap.html#post2876960

Possibly make a new administrator user account and test the issue ?
Cheers.
