After a search and a found file, Windows says "no longer located......

I like to do a SEARCH of a drive and find files that are names like "invoices", then cut them from the search and paste them in a folder together.

BUT, windows 7 Home Premium 64bit has a problem, it finds files with that name, says they are in PATH 12345 but when you CUT/COPY and PASTE to a new Folder, you get on some files:

Could not find this item

This is no longer located in C:12345\....................

Try Again Cancel

Why does it find a file only to tell you it is not there? Something must be stored someplace telling it during the find it is located there.

Does something need to be cleared that was stored that has the file located there?

Nothing seems to "clear" that info and reboot, etc does not help this error.

Just check that what you're finding isn't actually a shortcut to a file that has been moved or deleted rather than the actual file. Right click the "file" you want to copy and choose "properties"



Then check the Target and make sure that the path is valid.

Not sure what you mean my "ckeck the target" but

I have wasted lots of time trying to find out what Windows search is doing wrong and here is the update.

I have tried other 'phrases/words" to large folders and it most of the time it FINDS several files, it says they are in the TARGET folder, in this case UNCHECKED, and when checking the Property, it TOO SAYS the files are in that folder but when a file by file search is done, THERE IS NO such file the SEARCH is finding.

That is, it is LYING about the files being in that folder. Does not matter if you BOOT, do a chkdsk, it continues to falsely report those files in UNCHECKED. I did do a file by file in the target/search drive and no, the files are NOT there, yet Win 7 still reports them there.

So there is another SEARCH in windows and that is in the START bar/menu where you search for programs (and files).

That search too will tell you the files are falsely are in UNCHECKED also. It must be of the same screwed up code.

Someplace, cache, etc must be telling windows it is in the false folder and one needs to find it and CLEAR it.

Anyone? But SEARCH has be screwy every since XP, as XP was the last OS that seem to work property as it was uncomplicated, always seen to work right before Microsoft added these extra fancy parameters and Microsoft refuse to fix it.

Doesn't anyone know what is wrong with the SEARCH within Windows 7? OR how to get around it?

Use a different search engine.

For locating files, I use Everthing Search Engine.

START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe

Then copy/paste the following (you may have to right click on the top of the DOS box and select EDIT then Paste) -

del "C: locatoin of files\*.*"

You can copy and paste into the CMD from the properties of one of the two offending files to get location.

It deletes the files that aren't locatable which is what the thread was asking to begin with. You put in the location of the files that won't delete using all those other programs. Replace "location of files" with where they are showing up and it will delete them from the command prompt. It just gets rid of the empty shadow. I had the same issue and it fixed it for me. Mine were showing up in C: windows.old\user\dave\local\ or something like that

So I put in command del "C: windows.old\user\dave\local\*.*" and it removed them. Searching for the answer led me here and you guys were suggesting all these removal programs and a simple DOS command did the trick.

For the ultra paranoid response above this one, the phrase "location of files" is meant to be replaced with where that person was actually viewing the undeletable files on their system.

But it removes every file under C:\ windows.old\user\dave\local (for instance). Not what was asked as far as I can see.

*.* is dangerous unless you are very sure what you are doing.
