I'm not a genius at computers but I recently installed Windows 7 on my computer.
I run a wireless connection but when i try to connect through the list of wireless network connections, there is a red X beside all the networks and it says "The capability of your network adapter does not match the requirements of this network."
Can someone please tell me how to fix this?

I think my wifi card is TRENDnet TEW-421PC 802.11g.
My router security mode is set to WEP 64 bit (10 hex digits) and my router itself is a D-Link DIR-625
The rest of the specs is in the system specs thingy

1st. Might it be you set up your router to n mode only?
Your card is g TYPE, so router needs to be set to g&n or g only.

2nd, for troubleshooting, set router's security off, and do this also on the computer.
See if without encryption the connection works.

If it does, set router's and computer's security to WPA WPA2 TKIP.

Windows 7 does not support WEP

If you turn off router's security, you also have to set security to none on the computer.

Go to network center.

In the left pane click on "manage wireless networks"

In the next screen, doubleclick on your connection.

In the next dialog, click on security tab

Set security type to "none (open)"

Click ok.

That's it.

I dont think WEP is a very secure encryption method IMO.. too easy to crack..WPA 2 is the preferred method

I agree with that statement, wep is a "fools" security these days, its a false sense of security. But The above post stated that windows 7 didn't support WEP, which is not the case at all.

With certain *nix based software tools you can crack a wep key in under 15minutes with a decent laptop. WPA will still take a few weeks of packet capture, unless you can use a "middle-man" attack. WPA2-PSK is the way to go if at all possible. TKIP has shown some weak areas lately, nothing to be really concerned about right now, but keep that in mind.

I was one that thought WEP wasn't supported.

It's because in the security settings list, WEP isn't shown until you chose "shared".

My bad, sorry.

For home using i think the wep is just fine b'cause if there are too many encriptions there is to slow network!!! For best compatibility after changing the password of the router change the SSID too, so the pc can find it as new network and ask for the new password :)

Sorry for my bad english...

Using WPA2-PSK instead of WEP will not slow down your network. I am using WPA2 as it is harder to sniff and so on and my network is still running at maximum speed. It is best not to broadcast the SSID (the router definitely has an option that stops sending the SSID in the air) which will make the network "invisible" to normal Windows clients and you will connect to it only by supplying the name first. It is best to use long passwords with Aa-Zz and 0-9 and also spaces. You only need to set the password and SSID once. You can change them from time to time just to be sure. That's what I'm doing with my wireless network.
