I've googled, but I haven't found an explanation of how the folder could suddenly appear by itself. Is it evidence of a virus? The folder does have a timestamp near the time I signed up for a free trial of MS Office, but it's disturbing to think that trying Office caused this folder to appear in my home directory. If the act of trying MSOffice caused the folder to appear, then I have to ask what else did MSOffice do to my computer that I didn't ask for? Do I now have services running on my computer to support SkyDrive? Does my computer now connect automatically to some MS servers somewhere in the world without my knowledge?

Click Start and any of the personal file listings Pic/ Vids/... and look on the top left Under Favorites,
Is there a Onedrive or Skydrive listing there ? Windows Essentials - Download Windows Live Essentials
If so windows updates must of install the skydrive desktop app or as Andrew said Onedrive/ Skydrive is included in Windows essentials 2012 but could of been added by Office 365 ?

So it seems that Microsoft installed the OneDrive/SkyDrive thing on my computer when I signed up for a free trial month of MS Office. Did MS also start services running on my computer to support SkyDrive? Does my computer now make network connections to the outside world that I don't know about?

No. If you are not signed into skydrive, it is just a folder. If you are, it only initiates a connection when the folder is modified or looked at.

I don't know if you are the only one, I can just say that speaking for myself, I am extremely happy to have OneDrive (former SkyDrive) and be able to use it. I can see no problems to have an OneDrive folder on a PC, it's up to the user to decide if it will be used or not.
If you sign up for an Microsoft email account, you automatically get a free 15 GB OneDrive. If you do not store any files on the OneDrive (or SkyDrive) folder on your Windows, nothing will be sent to MS servers. Only the files you store in OneDrive folder will be synced (sent to OneDrive), you can then access them from any web browser on any computer.

Then you did not carefully read the installation agreement then. Always read everything carefully before installing anything.
It states when you install it that it is going to do that.
