Windows 7 users urged to uninstall broken update that wreaks havoc on software

Why is it lately that Windows update is like playing Russian roulette with your OS? :(

Windows 7 users may have automatically updated themselves into a pickle with a recent patch from Microsoft.

Microsoft has confirmed that the KB3004394 update it issued on December 10 can cause various problems. What's worse is that it may also prevent users from installing newer updates. The problems are reportedly limited to Windows 7 machines, and don't affect users running Windows 8 or newer.

Although Microsoft didn't specify all the problems users have been experiencing, AMD's Robert Hallock said the update can prevent the system from installing new graphics drivers—which is particularly troublesome as AMD's feature-stuffed new Catalyst Omega drivers launched the same day the borked Windows update rolled out. According to Infoworld, users on Microsoft's support forums have pointed out a litany of other issues, including failure to launch Windows Defender, problems with running VirtualBox and strange errors from User Account Control.
Microsoft has now issued a patch that will remove the faulty update from Windows 7 machines. Users can also remove the update manually by going to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates, right-clicking on KB3004394 and selecting Uninstall. This will require a restart.

I just checked my machine (Win7) and I do indeed have KB3004394 installed. Followed the patch for this and just about ready to implement it when I got an Win7 update. It was KB3024777 which from reading the article is a patch to fix KB3004394. That patch installed without issue. Now the question is should I still remove KB3004394 from the installed lists or ?? Tx

I did not have any problems with KB3004394 so I did not uninstall it.
Update KB3024777 came through this morning & it installed successfully & required a restart & so far no problems.

I am going to leave well alone & not uninstall KB3004394, now that a patch has come through.

Kb3024777

I also had no problems with KB3004394 and left it installed. Today I was offered KB3024777 and installed it. All went well until running a couple of programs that require .NET Framework 4. They crashed with an error message "an exception has occurred" or similar. After a reboot I see "Windows updates is reverting changes"

After a subsequent reboot I don't see KB3024777 installed but do see KB3004394.

At that point KB3024777 is offered and installed and after a reboot the same KB3024777 update is repeatedly offered.

Ran a couple of fixes to repair and reset WU and currently neither update is installed. Just checked for updates once more and KB3024777 is being offered. Installing it now!

Trying to figure out if the patch (.77) modified (..94) or rendered it useless. If it modified it, then taking out 94 the patch will be useless?? Did we get the patch only because update recognized that 94 was installed. Sorry....just wondering.

NoelDP has said MS are advising not to remove KB30043394 & to install the KB3024777 patch as apparently uninstalling 3394 can cause issues as well.

This is Noel's advise.

See the notes in December 2014 update for Windows Root Certificate Program in Windows - it is not advised to uninstall the update if already installed as it may cause other issues.
MS have since released a new patch designed to resolve the issues caused bythe failed patch..

Install KB3024777 to fix an issue with KB3004394 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

KB3024777 again

KB3024777 - reinstalled this update again after the failed install and everything is working. Those programs no longer crash.

Quote from another website:

It seems this update (KB3024777) removes kb3004394 and vanish without a trace (except in History). Neither seems to be available in the uninstall list afterwards.

That's exactly what I see on my machine. I've run Belarc Advisor and neither show up in the list of updates although KB3024777 does show as installed in Windows Updates history but not in the list of installed updates.

I am 400 miles from my main computer and like an idiot I used TeamViewer to run WU remotely. On reboot I have no taskbar, no desktop icons, no start button and maybe more. (Hard to be sure when you can't get around the machine normally and are afraid to do another remote reboot.) I tried the patch but it gives no indication that it even runs. I also managed to run System Restore but it made no difference. My most recent image was from five days ago but I don't want to lose the important emails I have received since then.

I managed to pull up Task Manager and got Windows Explorer running and am using my Start Menu from there. At least I managed to get my email client (Thunderbird) running and can keep up. I came down here (Virginia) for some job interviews and need to have my stuff. I am copying my Thunderbird Profile as I type this and am hoping to get everything configured locally here on my laptop. Needless to say, I will be watching this thread for updates.

Just some info that you might find interesting:

When I roll back my system to a previous system image backup and need to keep recently created files or documents (System Restore is kept disabled on my machine) - what I do is copy the important directories to a folder on another partition. That's usually Desktop contents, Documents and so on. Thunderbird profile too if needed. Then having rolled back my system I use:

TSR Copy Changed Files

It will copy any files from the folder that I created on the non windows partition back to where they should be so nothing gets lost.

That is why I don't update on day 1.

Yeah, it's gotten to the point that I wait about 2 days to see if any problems pop up with any updates. I used to wait a day, but now it looks like it would be wise to wait even longer then 2 days. :(

That & I also make a system image before I update.

What's up with MS lately? This is what, the 3rd month in a row where updates caused problems?

Me too, after all the update snafu I wait until the word is out before allowing them to update my PC. Just scanned the heck out of my PC's with all the programs and made a backup, so maybe the nasty stuff is gone and MS can correct all their mistakes before letting the updates do their deeds. No, I will never get as MAC :)

KB3004394 update

I just came to the forum with a problem with my computer and saw this thread so haven't tried the fix yet. May be my issue also.

The following issue was what I was going to post about: My computer running windows 7 Premium 64 bit with an installed USB 3card run a USB 3 external mini 1 Tb HDD at full speed. Also my computer just recently for some reason has a problem recognizing the hdd when plugging into the usb3.0 or a 2.0 port; most of time get a pop up asking if I want to format it or cancel.
