Windows Update is broken for some Windows 7 users

Where is the Auto Time setting function box?

Right click the time on the Task Bar, then left click Adjust Date/Time.

In the window that pops up, left click on the Internet Time tab, then left click on Change Settings.

Click Yes if a UAC window pops up.

Uncheck Synchronize with an Internet Time Server. This is the Auto Time Setting Function everyone was talking about (don't feel bad; it took me a while to figure it out).

Aha, good to know! Apparently it isn't actually necessary for this fix as, in my ignorance, I just changed the date, rebooted, etc. and it worked.

My apologies for this oversight. It seems that when I incorrectly used Auto Time function, I did mean the Synchronise with the Internet Time Server. So my apologies again & I hope it did not cause too much confusion.

Incidently I have adjusted this in some of my later posts on this problem.

Turn auto updates off, reboot, turn auto on, the usual hokem.

No need to reboot for me. Just turned Windows Update to never install updates, went back, clicked the check for updates button and it was ready to go. After that I could safely turn Windows Update back to install updates automatically (if you're really into it).

I also thought I would pass on my experience in correcting the big X on the Windows Update.

Running Win 7 Pro and I have full administrator rights. First, I ran the Microsoft troubleshooter for this problem and it corrected two problems. However, that didn't fix the big X.

There is no Auto Time function in my Date and Time. However, I was able to set the date to 12/2 and then, the update function was available. However, when I ran the check for updates, it wouldn't complete. It gave me one of those 80..... errors. I then set Windows Update to Never check for updates and I was able to run the check for updates. It found four updates and installed them. When I rebooted, the system was still set at 12/2. I ran the check for updates and none were found. I then changed the date to 12/30 (today). The Windows Updater was available and a check for updates found none.

The most easier fix is to change the expiration date in the .xml file of "authcab.cab". Keep in mind that the .xml is protected, but a text editor with administrator rights would write the file successfully.
