BSOD causes nvidia graphic driver update failure 0x0000009f

Hi Fella,

Appreciate all the helps I can get. This has been bugging me a lot until i formatted my laptop AND THEN it happens again. This happen when I tried to update my nvidia graphic driver to the latest. It crashes before I can even update it and many many occasions..

File is in the attachment. Please tell me the root cause.

First of all, Install Service pack 1 and all other windows updates. Otherwise the system will remain vulnerable to threats including BSODs.

Next, update the nvidia display driver. It is extreme too old.

Here's what happen, it started even before I formatted my laptop.

You see I always hate this kind of laptop, especially with Asus, it is very redundant if you ask me. This is a so called mid range gaming laptop, it comes with both Intel and Nvidia graphics. I know their intention is to help us save power consumption by switching it to Intel integrated graphic when we're not gaming, but it causes issue where sometimes it is not using the nvidia graphic. Beats me why Asus came out with this stupid idea, most other gaming laptop brand have only one graphic processor, Alienware or MSI for example.

So here's what happen. Before i formatted, there are many times the nvidia graphic card stopped working and BSOD. On next reboot, the hardware stopped working, it disappears completely in the device manager. Yes, it is the latest driver. I tried roll back and removed all traces of the drivers completely using DDU and re-install the latest driver. Again, after a few minutes it crashes again, all traces of nvidia gone. It's like it doesn't exist in my laptop. So how do I make it appear again? I did the same, removed all the drivers related to it in safe mode using DDU. Switched back and forth the SATA settings from IDE and AHCI until it appears again. This is the only way. Every BSOD shows the same result:

DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
Caused by driver: ntoskrnl.exe

Because the laptop is too dumb to figure out which driver or hardware went wrong, so it always blame it on the kernel driver. Lmao!

As mentioned, I already formatted my laptop, that's why so many things are outdated. Before the formatting, everything was the latest, windows update all downloaded and installed. Got the latest driver from Nvidia. Still the same, nothing works. Even now after formatted, still the same.

So I'm out of idea, not sure what is the root cause.

It is not the fault of Asus actually, but of nvidia. There is a mechanism inbuilt in your BIOS called nvidia optimus technology. That is supposed to decide which graphics is to use at a point of time. And that is the source of the issue, graphics switching.

You need to forget either of the graphics to get rid of the BSODs. And so you need to disable optimus. That is not an easy job, because the OEM BIOSes are pretty locked up by the OEM manufacturers for some reason (ASUS is not the only culprit).

You may not have access to those options in the BIOS. In that case, a BIOS update may help you to a great extent.

Try it. Let us know the situation.

Ok here's another issue:

Updating bios for Asus is easier that i thought because of flash utility. That being done, it shuts down my laptop and I can no longer switch it back on OMG. I tried everything, removed the power and wait for a an hour but to no avail. I am now using my macbook replying this.

What's going on? Is it time to send the laptop for repair?

You should not have tried to power the computer on. The mechanism was supposed to restart it at its own. Better you should have asked for more details about teh BIOS update, when you are not savvy with those sort of staff.

Apparently there is no other thing to do but to try to apply the earlier BIOS back. Dont try it yourself. Ask a tech nearabout you to do it for you.

Reading your post #3, I thought you will be able to do the BIOS update rightly.

Well, the reason was i am new to tweaking around with BIOS. I heard it's very risky. So didn't bother to learn. Why did I push the power button was because, after completing the update it just shuts down for more than a few minutes without restarting. So I pressed the power button again. But to no avail

Take it to a tech near you, hopefully they will be able to apply the BIOS properly.
