Random BSOD usually when not under load.

Ok, you can look at the kb numbers by the failed updates and see if they installed later. Usually if an update fails, it will be run again. With your update setting, you need to manually install the updates.

I don't recall, but did you install MSE? Microsoft Security Essentials (Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows) If not, please do so and run a full scan with it. Then run

Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller
Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller

ESET online scanner:

the anti-rootkit utility tdsskiller doesn't seem to work getting page not found when trying to download :(

you know your stuff :) just didn't know if the update failures might of been a clue as to the issue.

I have ran the eset online scanner and its come back no threats found, also ran tdsskiller and that was also clear. I installed an older NVidia gpu driver the other day version 332.21 where I was running 340.52 so will see if this helps over the next few days, if no bsod then i'll update to latest driver to see if this could be an issue, my card (evga gtx780ti classified) has a switch for two bios settings, I have kept it on the standard setting as I emailed evga to see if there was a 2nd bios to install for the card but the reply said what issues am I having with the card and a search on their site doesn't show any updated/alternative bios. which in theory makes the switch pointless

I believe you will find the bioses different. Unless you are overclocked, which you should not be, it won't matter. The LN2 bios raises the power limit slightly and a few other things. But, you should not be overclocked right now and the regular bios is where you should be. I have a 780 Classy and a 980 classy. So, I know a little about them.

Just dropping by to share a little information.

If you do a Windows 7 Update using 332.21 Windows Updates will probable show a update to 340.52 available.

The reason I state this is because I have a nVidia 460 and a 770 on two computers and both computers showed the same driver update. Both computers are using the 340.52 with no problems at this time.

Sometimes it takes a few times checking for updates before you get the driver update recommendation.

I wouldn't recommend installing the update until you check with Steve.

I think most people do graphics drivers different ways. and usually it doesn't make a difference as long as you uninstall the older drivers first. I never install graphics drivers from Windows update and usually run the latest drivers from Nvidia. I always install mine this way http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/327414-nvidia-drivers-avoid-problems.html and only install PhysX and the Display Driver. That does not make anyone else's way wrong, just the way I do it.

Please understand I'm not recommending a way to install driver. Just wanted to mention that one can slip in with Windows Updates and a need to watch so one doesn't slip in.

I usually do update a different way by not deleting old drivers, just installing and performing clean install, ive never had an issue until now, like you say there doesn't seem to be a wrong or right way.
I install driver and PhysX only never bother with GeForce experience or the 3d/hd options,
I have an older driver installed as a test, I will try your guide when I try a new driver to see if that helps.:)

Hello again essenbe, ive tried the original gpu driver I used since getting my card knowing it was stable and no crashes, but im still getting the BSOD. Just a quick question as another issue is starting to happen, im in the process of looking into this, its an error message ive had about Microsoft .NET Framework. Im just wondering is the BSOD being caused by a hardware issue i.e graphics card or is it possible I have installed windows incorrectly on my ssd.
You've been a great help with this, and if your sure it will be a faulty component, my next step is to try new parts in the pc ( borrowed from my sons pc ) if this doesn't fix the fault then I may just start a fresh and try windows 10 xD
Or if there is no way to say for certain if hardware or software I might just do a clean install first as less risk of damaging something.

Have you run all windows updates? If you are missing a net framework it will come through windows updates. You can go to Control panel - uninstall a program and look through there and it will show the net framework items you have installed. You probably need Microsoft net framework 4.5.1. If you don't have it, you can download it from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40773. I wouldn't try Windows 10 just yet.
