Hello everyone, i am in the Process of doing a new Build. i have an old DELL 1520 which is on its last leg. i was wondering if i could use the HD from the dell for the new build, until i can get a SSD, and could i use the OEM activation code on the new Build ?

The Dell was originally a Vista OS. i was able to successfully do a clean install of windows 7, and the activation was successful, it is now running a genuine copy of 7, can i use the activation code on the New Build ?

Thanks in Advance.

oem windows 7 os : Is tied to the motherboard on which you install first, you can change other parts but not motherboard (may replace with exactly same new mobo in case of mobo failure but cant install different mobo)
RETAIL WINDOWS 7: you can install on any pc irrespective of hardware used.
but you are only allowed to have windows active in only one pc at a time i.e one pc per license.
so here is the conclusion if you have oem windows 7 installed on one system you cant move this windows to other pc.if you can reuse your any parts provided compatibility to your new pc but not oem windows.

People you got it incorrect. I think the OP is doing this legally. He wants window 7 on a new computer. He bought windows 7 assuming it is retail. He can move the hard drive to new computer, the catch is whether or not Vista is an OEM. If it is an oem, he need needs to delete Vista and do a clean install of Windows 7.

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 using Dell re-installation disk (Dell sent me one). I also use Free Macrium reflect backup and restore.
What exact version of win7 did you buy? If its retail then you can always reinstall anywhere.

The version shown in mgadiag report is OEM SLP which is factory activation that isn't transferable.

Builders OEM may be allowed on new mobo if you use activation phone option.
.

Gregrocker,

I assume Pantz had Vista OEM on an old computer. I hope you can follow me on this, If Pantz upgraded Vista oem to Windows 7 retail, does windows 7 retail become an oem version and can't be transferred? Does Pantz have to delete Windows 7 retail off the hard drive and do a clean install of Windows 7 retail on the new computer to be ok with the EULA?

No, Win7 retail Upgrade version remains retail and never becomes OEM.

The mgadiag report above shows this to be an OEM SLP factory activation of Win7 Ultimate, which is almost never a version installed at Factory.

Pantz, who installed the Win7 that is in the mgadiag report? Where did it come from exactly?

Pantz: From your MGAdiag report on the old Dell updated from Vista to Win7
<Date>20080711000000.000000+000</Date>

Which is before the release of Windows 7: 20090728

I'm not sure if anyone asked yet, where did you get the install disc when you upgraded Vista to Win7 on the old Dell?

Hello Everyone, i hope i can CLEAR things up a bit ... LOL .... I originally Brought the DELL with VISTA, a short time later WIN 7 came out , and got a hold of a 32 bit windows 7 ( i don't remember where i got it from :) ) i then installed it. i was then Able to activate it, and have use it ever since without issue. updates an all.

seeing that i sold my older 64 bit backup system, ( which i still have the KEY for ) not sure if i can use that KEY in the new build
i am building a more recent backup system with the monies i got from the older backup system i sold .

i don't have the money for a SSD ( preferred for the new build ) so i was going to use the laptop HD until i can afford a SSD. just to get the new build up an running.

Thanks in advance

PS i believe i got the Windows 7 as a student offer at the time, MS was allowing schools to offer studends a Discounted price on line

Your post is still a little confusing but that is probably me. Here is my view on this.

It all depends on what your windows 7 disk is. I have no idea how windows 7 student disk works though, once you are no longer a student. I think you can still reinstall it but have may have to prove you were a student at one time. You should be able to get the key legally from Microsoft for your student disk, someone here should be able to tell you how.

Windows OEM from my understanding can't be moved. It sounds to me you are rebuilding the computer system. From my understanding (Gregrocker can correct if I am wrong) as long as you don't replace the motherboard you can use the OEM disk to do I clean install. You may have to do a phone activation call and say you did some major upgrading.

Windows 7 retail can be moved if removed from the previous computer. Might require a phone activation and say you moved this to another computer.

The old system key can't be used, unless it is not an OEM key and the person is not using the windows operating system it came with anymore.

This is how I understand this.

Good Luck :)

No matter where you get?How you get? you cant activate windows using oem slp key even on the same pc as it requires special instructions which is known by oem manufactures. The oem manufactures uses same oem slp key for atleast particular version of windows 7 in their pc so you cant use that.ya groze as long as you dont change mobo you can use oem key to reinstall but here it is a different story.he has oem slp not oem key.so impossible.

As per those specs the COA key is not transferable to another system.
It would be considered a counterfeit installation.

What one thinks they got as a COA, who installed it, who you call or don't call or any other thing doesn't matter.

The log tells the story and that is what Microsoft sees and goes by.

The legal key should be back of the computer unless it has been upgraded or has a retail version installed. We understand he can't use the slp but he can sure use the oem key on the back of the computer to reinstall the operating system on the same system it came with. I am just trying to make sure he does thing so it won't violate the EULA

As far as the Student version, I read so many different things about that it is really confusing. I read on some of those student versions, you can put them on more that one computer-I am not saying you can or cannot.

I would actually recommend the Pantz get a retail version of windows 7 forget about the student version if he can't get a re-installation disk from dell.

Pantz, did that system you have come with a factory restore disk? That might fix you issue on your old system that about the go out. If not, you should be able to get a legal re-installation disk from dell even though it is out of warranty and make sure you get the driver disk as well. You may have pay some for that.

If a retail upgrade key was used to upgrade Vista, why does the Mgadiag report show OEM SLP (factory activated) Ultimate? This could never be a retail copy of Win7 you said you upgraded Vista with.

You say above you had another copy of Win7 but you sold it with the PC, although you still have the key. If the new owner intends to use that copy of Win7 then you cannot use that key or it will rob him of Windows 7 on that PC he bought. However if he assures you (I'd want it in writing) that he is not using that Win7, or you sold it without the OS, then you can activate your new build Win7 with that key using the installer provided in Clean Reinstall Windows 7 for that same version.

yes groze he can use coa sticker key on same pc.but actual intention(he just asks) of op is to transfer oem key to other pc which is against EULA.the actual purpose of coa sticker is to remaind you that pc has genuine windows you cant use that on another pc which is against eula.there is less chance for him have coa for windows 7 as he pc bought during vista time.there is no point in talking about that as he cant transfer that oem key to another pc.

Nevergiveup,
Running Belarc Advisor will show the slp key by the way. I actually know how dell does the slp, since I had my motherboard replaced by them. I don't think I am allowed to say. It is much simpler then people make it out to be. I was surprised the motherboard replacement didn't cause a re-activation. I was still able to use the re-installation without requiring activation, it was pre-activated once Windows 7 home premium was re-installed and the system was not connected to the internet in anyway.
