Solved Cannot copy pictures from iPhone to hard disk due to permissions

I have an SSD C:\ with Windows 7 Pro.

I have a hard disk E:\ with my data.

My SSD's firmware was recently updated.

Ever since then I can't copy images from my iPhone to my hard disk, like I've done hundreds of times before. Unlock iPhone, plugin iPhone, go to Windows Explorer, copy images, done.

Right now I'm getting a permissions warning.

I checked E: > Properties > Security, I see the users and their permissions:

Administrators (my name\Administrator)
Users (my name\Users)

Full control is checked for Administrators.
Full control is NOt checked for Users.
All other options are checked.

Do I have to check Full control for users?

What happens when you try to copy/paste the images from your iPhone to your SSD now? Are you being returned an error message? What does it say exactly? Try checking Full control for "Users" too. Does the issue continue?

Finally, can you at all write any files on your SSD due to the current situation (regardless if it were a photo from your iPhone or a word document from your external drive)?

Hi exoTron,

The problem is my E drive, not my C (SSD) drive.

I tried changing it to Full Control and got this:

Error Applying Security
An error occured while appying security information to:
E:\$$foldername$$
Access is denied
[Continue] [Cancel]

I get that error for every folder on my E drive...

Hello Dragonchaser,

Before you can make unrestricted edits to the Access Control List (ACL) of an object, you should take owership of that object first.

You can do so by running the following command in an elevated command prompt,
Code:
takeown /f "E:\"
Or if you want to take ownership of all child items within a folder or drive,
Code:
takeown /f "E:\" /r

After doing this, you are free to make permission changes to that drive without being denied access.

Hi,
iphones have always produced a popup message on the iphone screen (Do you want to trust this machine) is this message being displayed because if it's not I would imagine the iphone is blocking access until you agree or allow access,

Have you tried using iTunes an update there might be causing the issues as well iTunes does update all to regularly :/
I like to refer to iTunes as pestware personally ;)
Cheers.

Hi,
iphones have always produced a popup message on the iphone screen (Do you want to trust this machine) ....

True only from iOS 7 onwards.

Dragonchaser, if you accidentally hit the "Don't Trust" button on the iPhone screen alert and you are running iOS 8, navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will reset the Networks settings but more importantly, it will make the Trust prompt appear again on the screen of your iPhone so that this time you can hit "Trust".

Hi Pyprohly,

I tried that but it did not work for me:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

C:\Windows\system32>takeown /f "E:\" /r
ERROR: File or Directory not found.

ERROR: File or Directory not found.

I am 100% sure it was an elevated command prompt.

I was logged in as myself; i.e. a user with administrator privileges.

Perhaps I should login as admin?

Hi TrashZone,

I have seen that popup hundreds of times and I always Trust my own iPhone on my own computer, or vice versa. :-)

That is really not the issue, I copied thousands of images to my computer without any problem, but thanks for the suggestion.

Hi exoTron, it ain't the Trust button. It's really some kinda permissions issue. Very weird it always worked and now it doesn't. The only thing I did was update my C drive (SSD) and then my E drive started acting up...

I tend to always agree with you (pestware earlier, shutting down now). LOL

It is on for a week cos I have to connect to it from abroad. Otherwise I always turn it off. Good boy.

This, however, does not solve my problem.

Maybe try clean boot to see if another program/ utility is messing with the access,
But as stated make sure your receiving the allow access popup message on the iphone,
If not this would be a iphone issue not a windows issue
See if you can do anything in iTunes

Hi TrashZone, I have worked with computers for about 30 years (then why am I on this forum, LOL). It's really, really, really not the iPhone. This is really a desktop permissions issue. But I appreciate your input!

To obtain elevated permissions you actually have to right click on the shortcut for the application (in this case command prompt) and select run as administrator even if you are running an admin account. As for permissions you need to give a standard user ownership to the folder in question and full control either to the users group or granted only to the account. With admin accounts the only problem would be if a permission is explicitly denied.

You might want to try the following program for accessing data on the iphone. It is very useful. ;)iFunBox for Windows | File Manager, Browser, Explorer, Transferer for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch
