Hello jmfal mate you say it stops spinning do you mean temporarily or completely? I would like to see what the temps are for starters. Use this and post back results. https://www.piriform.com/speccy

Now it could just be a faulty fan cable connection or connectors I would suggest taking the fan out and having a good look at them - they are usually soldered in place and may have become "dry jointed" that is to say the solder has come adrift from the solder points - that only takes a touch with a soldering iron to put right. Now the solder joints at the fan end are usually under that round label on the fan it is easily removed _ carefully and re-stuck back afterwards.
It could also be the fan itself has gone belly up try bench testing it with a power supply they are usually 12 volts. Now the plug end of the cabling is a different kettle of fish and takes some fine fiddling to remove the connectors from the plastic plug cover but the cables are crimped and less likely to be faulty but you will soon see on close inspection -just a gentle pull on them will soon let you know. Lastly those crimped connectors are prone to becoming loose on the pins either fro manufacture or frequent removal - it only takes a gentle squeeze with some small long nosed pliers to make them a tighter fit..

Having said all that the power to the fan pins on the motherboard could also be at fault and that maybe down to a faulty motherboard fixture or the supply to fans being not right.

But first take a look at the ruddy obvious as I call it :)

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out the problem.
As I said before I use Ubuntu and the fans are working just fine.
I an wary off leaving the PC on with the fans not running, I don'''''t want to fry my CPU.

I was wondering if something corrupted the OS or if I have some kind of virus.

Well mate that is easily fixed by starting off with these scans
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
http://www.superantispyware.com/
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(with ADW if you are running Kaspersky it will throw it up as malware just override Kaspersky)

They don't take long to run and if this does not solve anything there is more we can do but having said all that I don't think a corrupted OS would throw the fans out of whack.

Now just as matter of interest my main desktop has EUFI BIOS and the fans are controlled somewhat form there ie a alarms if the fans go below a certain level etc

Like I said before a thorough visual inspection is the best thing you can do.

No worries mate the two top scans will take the longest the others you could do in say 15 minutes.

Just out of interest what is that motherboard? If you cannot boot then the info will be in the BIOS.

To ICIT2LOL, the motherboard is an ASUS Z87-PLUS for the INTEL Socket 1150.
Many thanks for your replies and information, hopefully they will be useful in the future.
After talking to the IT Guru at work, he suggested that I reset the bios to defaults, I must have inadvertently changed a setting for the fans during overclocking, while I was just looking to increase the RPM's of the CPU fans.

Everything is working great.

Just a little reminder.

It would of been very helpful if you would of informed ICIT2LOL that had been doing some over clocking. This is needed information when one is trying to help another member.

Well that does explain a few things and as Layback said it would have been helpful to know about the OC. But never mind it's fixed.

Just as a matter of interest I recently bought a an Asus ROG gaming laptop and it has EUFI BIOS and while it was not a OC issue (I only do that with my Z77 board) it turned out with some help from another senior member that the BIOS required quite a few changes for the machine to be able to boot to 7. So what I am saying is that as Layback Bear says it helps when these problems crop up to make sure that the more info one gets the better it is for us to help others out. For example you would not believe the number of members who post queries here who do not include anything in the way of system specs even ie a lot just post OS 7 Home , PC desktop and leave it at that.
Anyway good luck and if you haven't seen this before it will make your machine even better.
