I took some time to look at the contents of my C: in more detail today. I found some directories there which I do not understand. I would love to learn from anyone here that is knowledgeable what these directories are and whether or not I can delete them.

My machine is a Dell Precision T1700 minitower that I bought new directly from Dell last April.

Here are the directories:

1) C:\Apps
--contains the file media.ini and the directory osmedia
--the osmedia directory contains more files and directories, including files like autorun.inf and setup.exe
--these contents remind me of a optical installer disk's contents

2) C:\INET
--contains but a single directory named COMMON, and COMMON contains nothing

3) C:\Intel
--contains a) the directory tree ExtremeGraphics\CUI\Resource (which is empty but for those 3 directories) and b) the directory Logs which contains 5 log files dated from when the machine was built.

4) C:\PerfLogs
--contains but a single directory named Admin, and Admin contains nothing

Does anyone know what these directories are?

My guess is that they are all crap leftover from when Dell installed Windows on my machine at their factory. Dell did a sloppy job cleaning up temp stuff after the install, leaving these on my machine. That correct, so I can delete them, or is there actually some other use for these directories?

Look at the date of when the Folders were created. Right-click each one and choose Properties, will give an idea if before you got the computer or later.

Look at the date of when the Folders were created. Right-click each one and choose Properties, will give an idea if before you got the computer or later.

The answer is that it varies, depending on which directory.

Below I give the results for DM = "Date Modified" of each:

1) C:\Apps
--the file media.ini has DM = 2014-03-29
--the directory osmedia has DM = 2011-02-11
--both Dates are before I received the computer

2) C:\INET
--the directory COMMON has DM = 2014-07-17
--this Date is AFTER I received the computer

3) C:\Intel
--ExtremeGraphics has DM = 2014-06-30 (is AFTER I received the computer)
--Logs has DM = 2014-03-29 (is before I received the computer)

4) C:\PerfLogs
--Admin has DM = 2009-07-13 (is before I received the computer)

By the way, I think that "Date Modifed" should be more informative than "Date Created" since something could be created at the factory but still be currently useful, whereas if it has never been modified since the factory, chances are higher that it is useless.

So, anyone know what these directories are and if they need to be saved or not?

My computer has a C:\Perflogs in it, with an empty Admin folder in it. It's dated 2009, which is well before I even built the computer.

I'm not deleting it however, it's used for something. Don't know what, but it's used for something...

When you see a date of 2009 it was probable installed when Windows 7 was installed.
I would leave it alone.

I find many things in W-7 that I don't know what they are. If I'm interested enough I Google them but in most cases I just leave them alone.
