Solved Is my new Hitachi HDD actually used

Just bought what I thought was going to be a brand new
( Hitachi Hdd 0f12455 2tb Sata 6gb/S Enterprise Storage 7200rpm 64mb Cache Bare Drive ), but when I was ready to install it in my case I noticed some kind of blue stuff (maybe glue) in 4 of the 6 mounting holes. Now I'm thinking this was a return.
Any thoughts?

Do you mean that the 4 mounting holes of the disk have blue stuff in them. That could be for keeping the screws real tight. Check whether a screw will work in the holes.

Yes, there are 3 holes on each side, the two outer holes look like someone might have used some kind of blue (Locktite). This is my 4th time buying a HDD and all the holes have always been totally clean in the past.

Would Crystal Disk Info be able to see how many hours the driver has done? Just guessing there.

It certainly sounds like Loctite 242 in the threads, although why anyone would want to Loctite a hard drive in place is beyond me.

Sure does sound like Loctite. I also have no idea why one would do such a thing.
Well at least they didn't use Red Loctite.

I have never got a hard drive or a ssd that had anything but clean threads for the mounting screws holes.

Defraggler has a "Health" tab for hard drives that shows the "Power-On Hours" parameter, but you gotta take it with a grain of salt... my WD 5000AAKX drive says "393d 5h" but I've only owned it for 172 days (Oct 19, 2014 - Apr 9, 2015). When I installed it, the POH read 0d 0h.

At the present the standards for SMART are very loose. The raw value for item #9 (Power on hours) is defined as a counter that increases with time. The unit of time is up to the manufacturer. Typically it is in hours but may minutes, seconds, or some other value. Apparently many utilities try to get around this problem by consulting an internal database to see how the data is to be interpreted. Needless to say such a database can never be complete.

Damm! I was hoping it was just a Hitachi thing, that the blue stuff was put there in the factory. The static bag looked like it was sealed at the factory, no sighs of ever being opened before. I really wanted this model because it's from back in 2012, it seems the more newer something is, the less reliable it is, everything keeps getting made cheaper and cheaper. Oh well, just got the RMA info for it, I'm shipping it back Monday.

I always go for Western Digital HDDs, Caviar Black for performance and Green for storage. Great drives.

From what I've heard, Hitachi is a step up from WD and Seagate, that's why I bought this one. Plus it carries a 5 year warranty.

Yeah, Hitachi was rated highest in reliability by a noticeable margin in that study that came out within the last 6 months or so. Some outfit who used thousands of drives at a time in a data center published their findings. Backblaze--that's who it was. Seagate was rated lowest. WD in the middle. I think this was for large drives.

It's probably less important now for home users than it was 5 years ago as most people are going to SSDs for their boot drives at least. HDD speed matters to a lower percentage of users. And everybody seems to think that HDD reliability in general is less than it was 5 or 10 years ago.
