Part 2: Microsoft silently preparing your PC for Win 10

I've got a virtual machine of linux mint - mate running on VMWare's free Player. Very straightforward, intuitive, much like Win7. The best of classic OS design. And I'm wondering why not make the move. MS always has muddied the waters in one way or another. The difference now is that there are viable options.

Yea I don't use Amazon to stream anything I prefer to download purchased content to view without an internet connection like at airports..... that I don't have a wifi account for except a little bitty cell phone
Creating a hotpot with a cell phones wifi costs more monthly,

Besides that I don't use Netflicks or care to watch Microsoft support videos and I'm not sure if Skype uses parts of Silverlight too but I don't use Skype either
So Silverlight is just unneeded it's just that simple,
If you don't use it why have it installed ?

We are hiding them because they are prepping our Win 7 computers to receive a Win 10 upgrade via Windows Updates, possibly sneaking it by us sometime in the future and possibly hitting us with nagware to encourage us to upgrade to Win 10. Also, M$ is being much more vague about the purpose of these updates than it usually is. The updates are not necessary for the safe operation of our computers. Even if we did want to upgrade to Win 10, most of us would prefer to do a clean install instead of an upgrade built off an existing Win 7 installation.

When you quote people and then remove something from the quote it becomes unquoted, but if you kept up you would have seen he asked that question.

If you remove too much it might not work correctly.

If that happens, just reinstall the updates. so far, I haven't had any problems.

It's not surprising that MS would be pushing ads & collecting data. That's what it's all about nowadays. Giving away the OS with data gathering capabilities gives them a huge database of information to sell to the highest bidder. They have to make money somehow.

MS won't say what they are.

Also:

It talks to someone somewhere on the Internet too.

I was playing around with my W7 Network Manager (disabled and enabled my NIC) and I had Process Explorer open.
When I enabled my NIC, Process Explorer showed that "GWX.exe" started "talking" via my Network.

On quoting. I usually but not always remove parts that I am not replying to, especially if it is long winded post. Sometimes, I try to reply using a name unless it is a general comment for all posters. Sometime time I don't quote at all and just use the name.

In my opinion, I think it is plain dumb to provided these useless updates. The reason, when the previous edition of windows 10 preview builds. You can upgrade without any issue in most cases, no updates needed. I tested it out.

Mint Mate is a serious contender. I run that too in VMware Player and the more I look at it, the more I like it. There are a few Windows programs though that do not run in Mint.

Mint Mate is a serious contender. I run that too in VMware Player and the more I look at it, the more I like it. There are a few Windows programs though that do not run in Mint.

I need to spend more time on it. It looks good but I'm a complete noob with Linux distros.

Regarding those mysterious updates - I think we should not get too wound up about them right now. I have made myself a 'watch list' of the KBs in question. And when the day comes that they trigger bothersome actions, I can still delete them. Chasing them right now on all my systems would be a full time job. Right now we don't even know what they will do.
