As it is when I set up a PC I bought at Best Buy I have to spend a day or two cleaning off the crapware. Then learning where MS hid all the settings if it's a new flavor of Windows. First thing I do before going online is disable the Windows Update Service. Otherwise I'd waste another day downloading and installing hundreds of updates.

If I install Visual Studio the installer knows enough to change the Windows Update to Manual and start it up.

I wish I had all the answers. Come to find out since day one the problem with this Laptop doing Restore Points has some jazz to do with failure to start COM+ Services Application. The thing is it usually comes up and says the restore failed, but it shows a Restore Operation restore point. Doesn't that mean it did the restore?

No matter what I do it fails even using Start in the Services Applet.

Stuff is too complicated now. Used to be I at least knew if something succeeded or failed. Now it's all nebulous. I wasted the whole day messing with it. Arrgghh!

I've been looking through the files of the KB2990214 update and to be honest these actually look pretty harmless. Just updates to the Windows update agent files mostly.
I've looked through and the .exe and .dll files I already have on my machine, just lower versions. Obviously it's to prepare for updating to Windows 10, but compared to KB3035583 (which is clearly meant to push ads for W10), I think this might be okay to install. Haven't installed it yet, but I've hidden KB3035583 as that just seems like junk.

What do you guys think?

By the way I've look quickly to windows 8 forums...didn't saw much talks about Kb3035583, KB2990214, KB29952664 for Windows 8.1.

I've uninstall from my girlfriend hybrid tablet the Kb3035583 and saw that on April patch Tuesday two others took place in WU so i took the decision to uninstall them too in the same minded thought to wait for the next OS to be fully release as RTM.

Kb2976978 and Kb3044374 were at the party.

Just a mischievous thought, but as MS are no longer supporting non-security updates for Windows 7, should they even be releasing updates designed solely to facilitate a future system upgrade ?

Sometimes this little tutorial by Brink can help.
It gives you all the Windows 7 default settings for Windows 7 Services.
I like most don't really know all the interconnection that Services have with other Services.

I think Windows 7 is still a young OS and supported till 2020 mostly, and its line codes could help the upgrade. MS have high interest to prepare people to his next OS for commercial purposes and re-evolution, which i can understand.
They could find in Windows 7 a solid based system that have done its proof and expect the actual end-users of being a little bored and harassed by so many updates/hotfixes that had been through since SP1 came out. Tired in case of a reinstall/Clean install to go all the process again. They tried with Windows 8.1, now 10 and next "Redstone"?

Their main problem is that it sorted out MS have done a beauty of Windows 7 and the lovers will not gave up that easily!

I get the distinct impression that we aren't supposed to know... if M$ wanted us to know, they'd have explained everything clearly. They have not.

I get the impression there's a LOT we're not supposed to know about. The push to turn most all MS OS's into 10 is apparently well underway. What makes me wary is that lots of people are out there tracking/selling your personal browsing habits. By giving away the OS, they are loosing out on a large chunk of revenues, so how will they make this up on their profit sheets?

So far I've been able to dodge the questionable updates, I normally sort through them anyway since not every hotfix applies to every machine & some aren't needed. I wonder how long before it gets to the point these updates just go right ahead install without your knowledge....providing it isn't already happening.

I agree I've in the past posted win updates that do not like to be hidden
These three that posted up in the last 2 weeks.. now are about the same,
The morphed Optional now Important one KB2990214
And I believe Recommended so far KB3035583 will need to be unhidden every update cycle before a successful update search list will appear
Otherwise I'll see a similar error code like this last go round 8024402c

It depends on what those update actually do, as said earlier it not wise for Microsoft to to do those updates the reason after the free upgrade, who wants to keep getting notified about it? I also assume there will be a checkbox to check to stop further notifications. Plus for people who need to do clean install of windows 7 those updates are going to make there job harder. I assume after the free upgraded expires, those notification will be stopped. Again, I am not a lawyer.

I did find out one interesting fact when I was testing windows 10.
Grub boot manager prevents windows 10 from being installed or upgrade to the next build. It will install but on the final boot up, it will say failed, restoring previous build or previous version. Other windows update have no issues with grub.

They bugged the very last version of MSE for XP with the annoying "end of support" notification that 1. was akin to the "windows is not genuine" notification, ie. very hard to stop/close it, and 2. It literally froze my mother's system,I had to uninstall MSE just to get XP to work again!

Similarly, the "upgrade to WX" notifcation might be very hard to dismiss...

Not gonna happen - at least not until 2019.
Even Vista still has two more years of supported life - until early 2017

Actually, you would have been wise to have heeded that warning. XP is past its End Of Life and is no longer receiving security updates from M$. That means any new security holes that get discovered will no longer get plugged by a M$ update. XP was a great OS in its time but its past time to replace it (and probably the machine it's on, as well).

Well as I don't plan on installing W10 until it's been out for at least a few months....



I'll consider un-hiding and installing them when it's time for me to upgrade, not when Microsoft wants me to. I don't want to be nagged to install W10 as soon as it's released.

Heed what warning? I'm typing this on XP with the version of MSE before the very last one for XP installed. Just b/c something is past eol doesn't mean it's not usable for the next decade or two, or that it's suddenly become "vulnerable" if you have the right protection in place...

Anyways, it's unbelievable the kind of stuff "they" would do just to get you to move to a newer OS...
