Part 2: Microsoft silently preparing your PC for Win 10

W10 is slower than W8.1 on my system. They are both in VMware Player and maybe that distorts reality.

why vmware? you could native boot w10 in a vhd[x] file container. It has the same effect as being in an isolated vm, but runs at native speed. I ain't never gonna install w8+ on a real partition again thanks to this feature.

Do you have a link to a step by step? The only time I tried a VHD I think it didn't work right because it was from an XP installed on D: that saw its system partition as H:. Now that everything is on C: again I'd like to give it a go.

I guess that is an option. But I have many systems installed under VMware Player. So it is just the most convenient way for me. And I can operate the systems side by side without bringing my host system down. Plus I can carry it form one PC to the next without having to worry about drivers and such.

I have never known a system that didn't work with the drivers provided by Microsoft (other than the touchpad driver on laptops to disable tapping). And you can in fact carry that vhd file to another computer, so long as you originally installed it in a non-machine specific environment (ie. Imagex/VirtualPC/Hyper-V) and sysprep it. When you native boot that vhd image, it will go thru all the processes of setting itself up for the new machine as if it were a fresh new install (but with everything else you did to it including hotfixes, installed apps, etc.) There isn't a point to using the modern OSes running at "emulator" speeds. Everything should be native...

I guess it is a matter of preference. Using the VHD is an option but I don't like to reboot my system. With VMware Player I can bring up any of my many virtual systems in less than 30 seconds from an external SSD. And the performance impact is really very minimal. Plus I can carry my external SSD to any of my PCs and I always have up-to-date systems.

A couple of my Linux systems I even run on my $99 Asus 11.6" laptop with only 2GB of RAM and an Atom processor. Booting is a bit slower because I have only USB2 ports, but once it's running, it is fine.

What's the point of test driving W10 if you can't test out the new DirectX, which isn't just for games...? Anyways, one thng we agree on, I haven't watched a Hollywood movie (at the theater) since Avatar 6 years ago...

I haven't been to the movies myself do to cost but I still rent dvd from family video. I hope watching videos doesn't move from the store to online. Family video does keep opening up new stores. I actually prefer watching dvds on my tv. They had vhs in the past.

I would not know how to play it. The only real game I know is chess. And then some games we played as kids. But that was 70 years ago.

Here is how if you want to try it someday.

Solitaire: how to play - Windows Help

That what I do, when I get really bored. I turn off the timed game and score options and choose draw one card option. Feel free to choose what options you would prefer.

If you can't access the games here is how.

To access games:

- go to start menu
- search for "Turn windows Features on or off"
- check "Games" and press ok
- your games should then be available in the start menu
