I was wondering when this would happen.

Evidently on the 28th of January 2014, no one will be able to use the FREE version of LOGMEIN.

some will be disappointed with this.

I used the FREE version to work with some friends and don't think that it is worth $49(USD) just for this kind of
help.

I do have the pay version of Hamachi VPN. But liked the instantaneous logmein free version.

Such is life..

Hi Rich. I have been using the free version of TEAMVIEWER to remotely help other remote users with computer problems for years now. It's pretty slick and easy to use from both ends. You might try it.

I got the e-mail announcement a few hours ago.

As of January 21, 2014, LogMeIn Free will no longer be available.

I took the sentence quoted above to mean that they had turned off access as of today...

As you noted, access goes away on the 28th.

I've had too much trouble with the Hamachi VPN just turning itself off whenever it feels like it to ever pay for it. You can use that VPN and UltraVNC for "instantaneous" connections. I would use the firewall on the remote computer to limit the connections to your VPN IP.

That is a good move for most everybody - but I'll warn that TeamViewer is very picky about where you can install it. My guess is that they actively monitor the number of connections that come from a single (internet facing) IP address. In my case, I had TeamViewer installed on 6 computers inside a non-profit org that I support. I got a notification to call the TeamViewer support. That is when they told me that TeamViewer was not free for non-profit use :-(

Silly me, I moved that particular non-profit to LogMeIn Free.

I do understand companies wanting to be paid, but when I volunteer my time to support various non-profits, I'm not going to pay* for the tools to do so too. And we can forget about these non-profits paying for these tools.... that is not going to happen.

*I might pay for the LogMeIn tool if it was more reliable. I've had it not respond too many times to actually pay for it. Restarting the remote computer usually solves the issue. But I have to use another RAT to do that or drive to the remote location (several towns/hours away).

Teamviewer works great for me. It needs admin tokens in the last couple of versions. Makes it tricky to run in pe.

I do not have my remote users actually install Teamviewer on their computer. When they need help, I just ask them to go to www.teamviewer.com and click on the "Joint Remote Session" button. Once they hit "run" a couple of times they get the 9 digit id, and 4 digit password which I then use to take over their machine. The only machine the product is installed on is mine. Seems to work well for me and my "customers" lol
Hope this helps.

My "customers" are usually asleep while I work on the issues that they e-mail/text me about :-)

It is nice to have TeamViewer installed so that I can reboot the remote system into the safe mode and still connect to clean malware.

I went and installed Teamviewer on a few of my friends computers and it seems to work fine. Time will tell. At least I can still use logmein to download and install teamviewer on their machines before it gets cut off.

I'm working on a computer right now and TeamViewer will not reconnect. Version 9.0.24951 is installed on both ends. This is the 3rd time in 12 hours that this has happened for this computer and it happens off and on for other computers too. [I've spent hours with their support staff on this random "won't respond" issue. I've given them log files and too much of my time. I like the tool, but I would never buy TeamViewer.]

That is why I was using LogMeIn as a second way in. Now I'll have to go back to using Hamachi\UltraVNC as the second way in :-(

I looked in the News section to see if this had been posted, never thought to check here in the software forum: Changes to LogMeIn Free | SevenForums News

(Updated to provide clarity on common questions)

After ten years, LogMeIn’s free remote access product, LogMeIn Free, is going away. We will be unifying our portfolio of free and premium remote access products into a single offering. This product will be a paid-only offering, and it will offer what we believe to be the best premium desktop, cloud and mobile access experience available on the market today. We will be notifying those impacted by the change in the coming days and weeks. In the meantime, we wanted to take a minute to explain the change and help users of LogMeIn’s access products better understand what this means for them.

Starting in January, we will gradually migrate users of LogMeIn-branded remote access offerings and Ignition-branded remote access offerings to a single, premium access product. Please note that once you log into your account there is a seven day window to upgrade.

That's a bummer. LMI was a great tool I enjoyed using for some clients of mine. I enjoyed the free version because it had just enough features for me to perform my job without spending more money. Teamviewer is great and all, but I loved the professional aspect of LMI without paying. I was so used to LMI Rescue from previous jobs so sticking with their free alternative was excellent.

Looks like I'll have to stick with Teamviewer.

Griffin Knob and Logmein

When I moved to WIN 7 the Griffin Knob can no longer be used to control the server end of the connection. It works fine using XP. Thoughts welcome. The Griffin knob does work well for local control such as audio volume control.

Also, still using FREE logmein with no issues.

Hi wa3gin, welcome to 7F! :)

Did you install it in Compatibility Mode? It says here that the program runs in XP and Vista.

You can try going to the properties page for PowerMate and setting the compatibility for Vista SP1 or SP2; Shown in Option One in the above Compatibility Mode Link, make sure run as administrator is checked.

If that doesn't work try OPTION TWO - Set Compatibility Mode of Application using "Troubleshoot compatibility".

If that doesn't work try a reinstall in Compatibility Mode; Make sure you have the latest program version. Fourth down on the right here: Original USB PowerMate Manager (v2.0.1) for Windows XP & Vista
PowerMate strongly suggests removing any previous installs. If you follow this method; Right instead of Left click on the program, there should be a context menu listing for "Install in Compatibility Mode" then follow the settings in Option One of the tutorial, make sure run as administrator is checked.

Reviews from these two Amazon sites report that functionality with the griffin is hit or miss with win7, it seems to be okay with win8, 8.1.
Amazon.com: Griffin Technology NA16029 PowerMate USB Multimedia Controller: Electronics

Also, still using FREE logmein with no issues.
Depending on the variables between machines one could expect the free version of LMI to continue to work.

Thanks for the ideas. I did set it up to run in compatibility mode and click on run as administrator; as well I set it for Vista SP1...WIN7 was an option but I didn't try it. I then set the Powermate to duplicate mouse clicks instead of F9 and F10. Now the server sees the Powermate and I can tune the radio with one knob and adjust the volume with the other. We're happy.

Best,
wa3gin

Today while I was setting up a fresh installation of Win7, IE reported something wrong with the Thunderbird download and would not accept it...and lately I have not been able to use Firefox to download iTunes. My biggest problem, however, recently came along with the iZarc installer and I ended up having to reset Firefox to get rid of strtpoint.
