Solved BSOD playing ESO, BCCode a.

If it was my computer, those temps would be way too high at idle. Your TJ Max is stated to be 100°C, but many people believe it is somewhere between 85-90°C. That does not give you much headroom when the CPU becomes stressed. What CPU cooler are you using? Have you cleaned the case out of all the dust and made sure that the heatsink fins are not blocked with dust? Make sure that whatever CPU cooler you are using, has the fans turning on it. Failing all of that I would clean and reapply thermal paste between the CPU and Cooler. If you are running the stock cooler, I would be sure to get an aftermarket CPU cooler. Your CPU is a hot running CPU to begin with, but the temps you gave at idle are simply too high.

Unfortunately, I'm still using the stock cooler that came with the thing. When first installed years ago, with the stock TIM that came on the CPU, the mobo LED read 32c idle temps. It's only gone up over the years, and I've been unable to ever get them that low again, even using AS5 in tiny amounts.

All the fans are working, yeah. I just replaced two of them when I recently reapplied the thermal paste. And about that application, I used less than a grain of rice right in the middle of the heat spreader. That was the second or third application, with the best results. The prior attempts I'd used too much and the LED was reading around 50-56c idle. The lowest I've seen it get with this application was 46c, when the ambient temp in the room is down. Not as low as I'd like it, but without buying an aftermarket cooler that's the lowest it's been since being built.

Also, I notice that my vcore is currently reading 1.282v (max of 1.294v). After a little poking around, I've seen people say they actually OCed their 950 with the same vcore. Is it possible that the BIOS on this board has defaulted the vcore to a value slightly higher than it needs to be? I've never fiddled with the voltages at all, other than setting the XMP profile for the memory, to make it run at the rated speed.

Edit: for clarification, I'm not OCing anything. I've just noticed that from what I've read, people who have OCed their 950 ended up with a similar vcore as mine is without being OCed at all.

First, with that CPU, it is absurd that Intel even sent that cooler with the chip. I would buy a good aftermarket cooler as soon as possible.

Yes, it is possible that bios changes did occur. Go into BIOS and check what your sata Controller is set to (IDE, AHCI or Raid). Then set optimized defaults. Set your sata controller to what it is set to right now (or you won't boot), set the ram to it's XMP values and set your boot order, save and exit. That should put you at stock voltages and settings.

Haha, yeah... I've heard they've been shipping out the same HS+F combo since... forever.

But, I'll go in to the BIOS and do that right now.

Did that... vcore actually rose to 1.317-1.329.

Core temps sitting at 70/70/69/69.

Edit: The Turbo Boost feature got reabled with the defaults being loaded. I turned it back off, vcore is back down to 1.282v.

Core temps sitting now at: 67/67/66/66. Still higher than they need to be.

Yes, I have a whole box of them, all unused. Yes, I think you have something else going on there. Turbo boost should not be an issue. It is actually a good thing. How about downloading, if you don't already have it, CPUZ Softwares | CPUID, and post screenshots of the CPU, Mainboard, memory and SPD tabs. The SPD tab can select each Dimm Slot from a drop down in the upper left. Just post the Dimm slots that are populated with ram. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-screenshots-files-upload-post-seven-forums.html

One of my systems has a i7-960 and I can verify that a stock Intel cooler is not enough for any 900 series Intel cpu even when every thing is set to default. The 950 and 960 are little toasters and need after market cooling.

Requimatic, look on EVGA's web site and see if there is a more current BIOS file than you have.

Core volts at 1.282 shouldn't be any problem.
I have mine set higher (1.312V) because of a over clock (4.1) but I have a lot better cooling.

Even at 1.282V I believe a better cooler is needed for a 950 cpu.

Some day I might find a use for all those Intel stock coolers.

Come to find out, heat was the issue. The day after the air conditioner was turned on, and every day since, everything is golden.

Considering my CPU's vcore was slightly higher than it really needed to be (People have OCed their 950s in the past with 1.2 to 1.3...), I lowered it to 1.18 while still trying to figure this out, and that in itself brought temps down a bit also. System is stable at that voltage, too, so there's that at least. I'm barely breaking 60c now, and that typically only happens in a Source Engine game.

In any event, big thanks to everyone for helping out! I guess I just didn't expect heat to be an issue after having just replaced two case fans and the TIM on the CPU. Turns out I was wrong! While I feel silly in that regard, at least I learned some more from the whole ordeal.

Marking as solved. Thanks again everyone!
