I have had this hp 2711x monitor for a few years now, and the resolution setting has been perfect. Then a few weeks ago the resolution changed to 1024x769 by itself and is listed as generic non-pnp monitor. I tried to change it back to the usual resolution but I cant change it back. I have tried to force set it using nvidias tool but to no avail. I plugged my tv into it and it was fine so i plugged my monitor back into the computer and then it went back to the right resolution but when i turned the computer off the resolution went back to 1024x768 and I cant figure this out at all. I have a evga 560ti card and I have tried downloading other drivers too. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Try this (even though you say you tried other drivers):
Graphic Card Driver Clean Installation (Belongs to MistUnleashed):
1.Run the Guru3D Display Driver Removal Tool: Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 15.3.0.0 Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 15.3.0.2
2.Download CCleaner here (CCleaner - Download) and run both the Cleaner and the Registry Cleaner to remove left-over keys.
3.Go into C:\Program Files & C:\Program Files (x86) & C:\ProgramData and delete any leftover Nvidia files.
4.Disable automatic driver installation: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2500967
5.Restart Computer.
6.After restart go to: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers and install the latest Nvidia Package (Including the 3D Vision Drivers - Install it all). Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers
7.Re-enable the automatic driver installation: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2500967
8.Run CCleaner again (as instructed in Step 2).
9.Restart Computer.

Hmm that didn't work either. Do you think if I just completely wiped my computer and started with a fresh install that might do something? I guess it could also be a possibility that the monitor just doesn't work, but that doesn't make sense to me because it does work intermittently.

Tried another port on the GPU yet? Is there a factory reset option in On-Screen Display menu of monitor?

Shutdown PC, remove cable from graphics card and plug in to 2nd DVI port. Or try HDMI or HDMI-DVI connector.

By the way do you have an on-board GPU too?

Do you have anyone at home that might have changed the cable to on board? :P

See if you are using the correct GPU, and try disabling the on-board in BIOS.

Yep, you got on-board :
Integrated ATI Radeon™ HD 3000 GPU

I know its on my 560 cause it says the monitor is on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti. I'll try disabling the on board.

So that did nothing as well... I dont think its the monitor though because it knows it needs to be at 1920x1080-60hz instead of 1024x768. Its telling me that it is not at its recommended settings.

Ok, I got one final suggestion:

Enable on-board GPU and switch the cable to it
Uninstall Nvidia drivers
Shut down and remove GPU
Download and run DriveCleanup as admin Drive Tools for Windows
Restart PC and run ccleaner to clean registry
restart and attach the GPU back in
Install the drivers

edit: Oh I got one more, try changing Aero theme to something else

Just looked at nvidia control panel and strangely it says that the monitor is being connected via DVI even though I am using hdmi. The monitor says I am using hdmi but my computer is saying DVI. Obviously this is some sort of driver error right? And I'll try those things now.

Hmm no idea, DVI and HDMI use the same signaling though, only the connector is different. Is both sides of your cable HDMI?

Also it should be noted that I wiped my hard drive and my ssd, installed windows 10, and then back to 7. I dont get why it would still be an issue if I wiped my hard drive and my ssd. Would it make a difference if i put my os on my hd instead of my ssd? Yes my cable is hdmi to mini hdmi and changing areo didnt help either
