Computer slowdown, Startup now fails and Startup repair won't launch

Hi,

I am trying to help a family member with problems with their laptop. Over the past few months it has been slowing down badly, with anything from photos to websites to excel taking minutes to load. Usually I was able to fix this by identifying the programs slowing the PC and ending them in task manager. In the worst case scenario restarting would fix it

This evening, someone tried to turn it on, and on return found it on start up repair. After waiting a while, I realized it was in the notorious start up repair infinite loop. After turning off the computer, and trying a normal boot, it loaded the windows logo, before going back to the start up failed screen. After choosing the start up repair option, the windows background appeared, but the start up repair failed to appear. Multiple restarts have also failed to have the startup repair appear. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

(Extra point, as it is a family PC, the owner is not too keen on me messing around in bios or safe mode)

Good news to you then, boot into Safe Mode :D

Start with this as AVG had a recent issue, perhaps you are experiencing the same

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/373216-windows-7-stuck-starting-windows-screen.html - includes a link to how to uninstall AVG if you can't boot into Safe Mode.

Also set the laptop to run a clean startup - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html (keep security software checked)

You can try re-installing AVG or go for Microsoft Security Essentials. Also scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free (you can start the free trial, easy to revert to free when trial is over).

It doesn't seem so much of an issue of being stuck on the startup screen, as the PC automatically reboots and goes to the startup failed screen after a minute of two of the windows logo.
I will try booting it in safe mode next time.
Thanks

I think it's less that the start up screen is stuck. Whenever I launch, the start up screen loads up (windows logo for maybe a minute) then the computer automatically reboots back to the startup failed bios screen. Two options are offered, start windows normally or startup repair. Starting Windows normally just repeats the issue, when I launched start up repair the blue windows background appears, but the windows startup window does not appear.
