Since the OP cited privacy, I would say that the OP would be interested in limiting the list of items that flows into any jumplist as items are manually deleted.

Setting NTFS folder level permissions via ICACLS might be able to prevent the list of extra items in the first place. Then the jumplists would be limited to only the items shown. This is not what the OP asked for, but it might be acceptable and requires no ongoing labor.

If the OP is concerned about privacy, then the WebCache folder might be worth researching. It too tracks some files that are opened.

The professionals commenting there say that you cannot partially clear some items from the jump list. One option as UserNameIssues hinted at earlier is to prevent apps from creating jumplists but then there will be no application specific history at all. You might still get a recent intems list on the start menu.

Where you able to test this? I still saw jumplists after deleting the contents of

I never figured out the ICACLS syntax to make the folders read only to all accounts.

I haven't tried it. What does work for me (limited testing) is to create a directory with the same name as a jumplist after deleting the jumplist.

Here's EmEditor not creating any jumplists at all and it's pinned to both the start menu and the taskbar.

Find jump lists created by EmEditor in Recent Items subfolders using strings.exe:

Create directory with the same name as the jumplist and delete the jumplist:

With the directory created in both subfolders - there are no visible jumplists (for Emeditor)

Re: ICACLS syntax. I find that kind of thing hard to remember and prefer to use various softwares for permissions issues.

From what I understand new jumplists will be created even if you delete the above. Like you say - sorting out permissions might prevent them from being created. I haven't figured out how.

However, this is not what the OP wants:

Jumplists = yes.

Long lists that feeds old stuff to the jumplists = no.

I'll leave it to the OP to figure out ICACLS - since Microsoft has decided not to show the normal Properties GUI for these folders (AutomaticDestinations & CustomDestinations).

Re: Keep shortened jumplists only. I haven't figured that out except keeping pinned items only and clearing the rest does seem to work.

Interesting find: The registry entry here enables/ disables document tracking and for me prevent items being added to jumplists and start menu > recent items:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Start_TrackDocs
