Would you recommend MSE final over Kaspersky 2010?

MSE has been tested thoroughly, by several of the accepted testing bodies. Personal experience isn't worth much, but I'll tell you that it and Avira are the only AV products I've seen warn and prevent the Facebook virus from infecting a system, of the ones I've seen.

I'm not a big microsoft lover but I do tend to stay with the built in products as long as they do the job. It seems that MS products are more reliable with the MS OS, use less overhead and get updates if there is a bug, a lot quicker. Not to mention everything is free pretty much.

MSE runs native 64 bit, I only know 1 other out there that has a 64bit native version. So it should be faster than a 32 bit Virus scan. It does seem to use a little more memory than other virus scanners. The CPU usage is 0 except during a full system scan.

I learned today that Kaspersky is apparently using/listing/obfuscating the HOSTS file as some kind of anti-banner innovation. If it is true, for that reason alone I would not use their products.

I agree, but I do use one lazy trick. I use HostsMan for the sole purpose of removing duplicate entries. I append mass adds via cmd, then clean out the dupes.

i'm a kaspersky man, and i don't see anybody obfuscating my hosts file, it looks to be exactly as it was when i last looked at it, with no extra entries - what exactly do you mean, Antman?

do you have a source for your rumours?

On this forum today, someone was discussing some Anti-banner ad component of kaspersky. While the hosts file is not the only method for blocking banners, it is the only way to do so without a TSR.

Found it -

The anti banner feature is available in Kaspersky Internet Security which blocks ads and banners from websites. A very nice feature which helps page load faster.

An advantage to using a TSR would be any form of of automated regular update. A disadvantage would be using a TSR to do what the system does by itself already.

Kaspersky is not maintaining their own unique list. Numerous persons and groups of goodwill post lists of these IPs on the net for free and easy access. Add them to your HOSTS file.

All URLs are compared to the HOSTS file for IP conversion prior to leaving the PC for a DNS lookup.

TSR - Terminate and Stay Resident. My age is showing.

If Kaspersky is not modifying/using the HOSTS file, Kaspersky is instead obfuscating the function of HOSTS.

I am not trying to bag on Kaspersky. I am just saying, "Nice feature. Don't need it."

numerous persons and groups of goodwill also post open-source operating systems on the net for free and easy access.

i prefer paid alternatives that make my life easier, because i don't like routinely having to muck about editing text files to get the damn thing to work how i want it to.

i have a similar view to av software - i just want the darn thing to work, and keep working, without having to routinely remember to manually download lists and edit text files to be safe.

each to his own - it's great that there is so much choice out there!

For free MSE is great...
BUT, if you want to pay to have security then I would recommend KIS 2010 & is what I use.
(I've never been infected using Kaspersky for the last 6 years)
I like it better than MSE because I have more total control over what it does or doesn't do.
Kaspersky can get go over some people's heads though when it comes to the Advanced settings so for those you should either use it with default setting or use MSE.

But given the choice between the two I choose KIS 2010!

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 will not install on my us version of windows 7 x64 ultimate. During install keep getting Error 1722 InstallDriverKl1x64. I tried running it in compatibility mode and still nothing. As to date Avast is the only one to install without any troubles. I am going to give the MSE a try.

i'm not sure about this not yet ready for windows 7 - i've been using the standard kis 2010 version 9.0.0.463 with my win7 x64 rtm for a while now, and all is groovy - i don;t recall problems with the rc1 either.

it sounds like kaspersky support being real lazy.
