Solved I'm having trouble to understand my SSD memory

Hey guys,

I'm looking forward for the windows 10 update, that'll come at the end of july. So I thought to clear up my local hard drive, because it will be over 3 GB I guess, that are currently free at my hard drive. I've got a Kingston SSDNow V300 with 60GB by the way. So I've deinstalled few useless programms and moved some stuff to my HDD. So like I said I got 3 GB free space on that SSD. I calculated the memory of all the folders together and I've come up with 18 GB. I know that the operating system is taking huge space but it couldn't take that many, could it? Let's say the operating system has 20 GB-->60-18-20=22?! What now? Appreciating any help, programs, some windows tricks, etc.

Sry for my english, I'm german. Hopefully it's understandable.

Try WizTree and see if it helps show where your space is being used.
They have a portable version, no installation needed.

Hello and welcome M mate personally and of course if you can afford it I would clone the current ?64GB drive to at least a 120GB SSD and then you will have plenty of room to move. That soze is now very reasonably priced even the Samsung ones.

That is what I did I cloned my 250GB Samsung to a spare one I had and then installed the 10 preview to it. Then if you don't like the 10 you can go back to the cloned drive or just keep going with the 10. Either way you are ahead plus you have the cloned 7 to fall back on the re-clone the second drive if you need to.

Now for the cloning I use Macrium free - real easy and with SSD's takes about ten minutes

Macrium Reflect Free see my pick - there are only two drives in the machine so it will pick the non booting drive (F)

PS should have said you can only clone from small to large drives or same size to same size

I agree with ICIT2LOL; you really should get a larger SSD. SSDs need at least 20-25% overhead (empty space), in addition to what has already been overprovisioned by the manufacturer, to ensure proper operation and long life. 3GB empty space is just too small for a 60GB SSD. You should have at least 12GB empty space on that drive. You might be able to pare down what you have now but it will be a constant battle to keep it down. A 120-128GB SSD will be plenty large unless you are a gamer and also want to keep your games on the SSD.

Good luck mate because as Lady Fitzgerald says a 64GB drive is TINY take it from a right royal twit (me) who kept plonking stuff (programs, data etc) on a 120GB and then lost the lot even though I kept the drive pretty clean and tidy because I did not have enough space to even run a system restore, delete programs, or disk cleanup.

Just work it out if you want the 10 as well as the 7 OS's data and settings then you are looking at a large chunk of disk space even before the myriad numbers of updates and as I already have 10 on one machine I can tell you it surprised me. What I should have done was to replace the drive way before I got to that point

When I get back to my own place I will post what the current total space used is and I am only on build 1 of the 10 keeping my 7 data programs and settings.

But I am not going to take anything away from Davids excellent suggestion though because that is what I use to keep and eye on things.
