New month New updates

Tried doing the updates last night but came back this morning to find computer still stuck on message processing update 1 of 25, do not switch off. Twelve hours of being stuck on that update I gave in and cold rebooted. The PC booted up, did something with registry numbers flashing up on screen, rebooted twice more then rebooted OK. Now I have no idea which update was failing and whether I should try again to instlall some or all of the updates. Any advice?

I ran into the same thing although I was nowhere as patient as you were. My computer recovered from the cold reboot without a problem.

Don't you normally leave updates to the weekend in order to pick up on any rogue ones?

Normally, I do but I had to do a restore from an image way back in May and didn't feel like trying to sort out this month's updates from all of June's and July's on top of all the program and other updates I had to do as well (it was late last night and I was tired and cranky) so I just quickly scanned through all of them to eliminate the ones on my Win 10 Related Hit List (also called the Specialized Highly Intensive Training list) and ran them all. I figured if any one of the new ones that I did download and install caused a problem, I could just restore again. Hopefully, things will be back to a semblance of normality next month.

It is. I had that one and a second one reappear despite having both of them hidden from earlier appearances; MS frequently trying to ram them down my throat is also aggravating (I better words to describe my feelings but Mama told me not to use them).

Microsoft really needs to back off with the "forcing it down our throats" style of providing updates , all they are doing is making it more likely people will say "NO" to Win 10.

Don't use trickery or force because your going to get bit in the end , maybe we should all install the updates they recommend to give MS the impression that we are all going to install Win 10 and then dump the entire lot and stay with our current operating systems.

I have too much Irish in me to give them the satisfaction. Unless they quit using eejits like Ballsmore and Nutella for CEOs, it's looking more and more like Win 7 and Office 2010 are going to be my last Microsoft products.

The risk to my current system is too great. I noted errors on the first batch of GWX updates. Besides, I'd be afraid I'd wake up some morning and my PC would boot to W10. :shock:

I waited a few days before installing new patches. Because every PC is different, I think it's a matter of days for a large number of users install the patches and to see if it is free of errors.

Hopefully when it is on sale Windows 10 they stop sending those(W10) patches :S

I doubt it. MS really, really wants to get everyone on Win10 for various reasons—total control a la Apple's walled garden, improved adoption figures (no matter how artificial), not having to support earlier OSes, etc.—and is willing to pull every underhanded trick it can (and has been).

Funny; I understand her just fine. I love how she talks when she gets mad. I admit her voice is a bit annoying (I've been told that isn't how the actress talks in real life) but that's part of her character.

Indeed, she talks quite normally in real life. I liked it when they had her being confused for Howard's mother, but I think they've taken it too far now. Plus they've given her character an edge that makes her quite bitchy now, and rather less likeable at least to me (and my family).

They briefly do it, in their security bulletins but machines are not all the same in configuration and mostly you see issues after the patches applyed!

Ah, you misunderstood me. I meant it would be cool if Sheldon and Leonard discussed the problems with Windows Updates in Big Bang Theory, it would also enable us to discuss that program without being off-topic :!

As far as your interpretation of my comment is concerned, however, I do think that Microsoft could give more details as to what the patches relate to, not least a little more openly in relation to the W10 nagware patches. But also with the optional updates generally where some knowledge of the patches is required if users are to be able to decide whether or not to install them.

MS will never do that since more people would then opt out of the nagware Trojans MS has been repeatedly foisting on us.

Seffrid wanted to tell more about those Optional updates that are coming through WU. MS gives knowledge base article before every patch in their bulletins, but you have to do an extra step to read all about. Even with that your not really informed and most of the time you'll have to dig it yourself, the plot (if one there is!).
