WinDBG - Install and Configure for BSOD Analysis

How to Install and Configure WinDBG for BSOD Analysis

   Information

WinDBG (Windows DeBuGger) is a Microsoft software tool that is needed to load and analyse the .dmp files that are created when a system BSOD's. The latest version of WinDBG allows debugging of Windows 10.x, Windows 8.x, Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

This tutorial will show you how to download, install, configure and test WinDBG in preparation for analysing BSOD's.

   Note

WinDBG requires .NET Framework 4.5.2 in order to run. If it's not installed, download it from this location, and install it before downloading and installing WinDBG.

Step 1

Downloading and Installing WinDBG

1. Download the WinDBG sdksetup.exe setup file.

2. Run sdksetup.exe, and specify the installation location (this example uses the default location):1.png
3. Once you have accepted the licence agreement, you will be prompted to select the features to install. Select only the Debugging Tools for Windows option, as shown. Proceed with installation.2.PNG
4. The debugging tools will be downloaded and installed.3.PNG

Step 2

Associate .dmp files with WinDBG

If configured correctly, Windows will write information to a .dmp file when the host system BSOD's. In order to read the information within the .dmp file, it needs to be associated with WinDBG.

Open an elevated cmd window. Copy the highlighted text below, and paste it into the cmd window and hit enter to change directory to the installation location path.

cd\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Debuggers\x64\

Now copy this highlighted text, paste it into the cmd window, and hit enter to make the association.

windbg.exe -IA

This is how it looks when executed in the cmd window.4.PNG
If done correctly, a new blank instance of WinDBG will open with a confirmation box. WinDBG can now be closed.

Step 3

Configuring the WinDBG Symbol Path

The symbol path is the location in which WinDBG searches for symbols each time it reads a binary in the BSOD .dmp file. It is critical to get this step correct.

You can specify any location to create a cache/store of downloaded symbols, but I recommend using the default location (as used in this tutorial).

To create and set a symbol path, do the following.

1. Start a blank instance of WinDBG by going to:Start > All Programs > Windows Kits > Debugging Tools for x64 > WinDBG (x64)
2. In the WinDBG panel, go to:File > Symbol File Path
3. Copy the highlighted text below and paste it into the Symbol Search Path box, and click OK - there is no confirmation.

SRV*C:\SymCache*Symbol information
5.PNG
What that line means is :
  • Create a folder called C:\SymCache
  • Download new symbols from the msdl site and save them to C:\SymCache
4. Save the symbol path by going to:File > Save WorkSpace
5. Close WinDBG.

Step 4

Testing the WinDBG Installation

1. Download this small zip file.View attachment test.zip 2. Open it, and double click the .dmp file.

3 WinDBG should open automatically and you should see some text appearing in the workspace. Since this is the first .dmp file being read on your system, WinDBG appears to be - slow do not interrupt it. What is happening is:
  • A folder called Symcache is being created on C:
  • Symbols are being downloaded and saved to C:\Symcache
The next time a .dmp is opened, it will be quicker since it already has some symbols. Over time the C:\Symcache folder will grow in size as more symbols are added. My current Symcache folder is 1.07GB in size.

   Tip
If you think your \Symbols folder is starting to take up too much disk space, simply delete the contents of the folder in Windows Explorer - WinDBG will automatically download the required symbols when you open a .dmp again.

You will know the reading of the .dmp file is complete when our output looks like this. Note the breakpoint that I have highlighted in bold text red - that means the .dmp file has been completely read.

You are done. WinDBG has been installed, .dmp file associations created, and symbol path correctly setup.

   Tip

If you open the .dmp files from within the .zip file, you never need to save individually .dmp files to your HDD/SSD - all you need to do is delete the original .zip file once you are finished with that BSOD. This will save you a lot of space in the long run.

Colin I have now got this on all my machines but on this new laptop I think I may have slipped up somewhere because trying to open the test zip I get what is in the picture. its asking me for a file opener..

My other machine including the latest laptop are fine .

Is this just a matter of uninstalling the kit and do it again?

Just did Colin everything ok I entered the last paste into the wrong slot:o I think I might have to do it again on my new machine though because the test dump or any dump uses 7zip when opening the file/s. They still open but just with that extra step.

If the files are zipped John they will open with 7Zip/WinRar/WinZip etc as they haven't been extracted yet. If you download a set of logs, right click on them and open with 7Zip the dumps will then open with WinDBG automatically.

Ok Gav I have just reinstalled and it still will not open without me having to have 7 zip installed - the other machines all open with the grey screen and the file list (no 7 zip) . I suppose it is no big deal perhaps it is some HP software mucking me around.

I can live with it as this is really only my travel laptop the other machines are fine and used more than this one:)

Still a handy tool still though eh?

That is really odd then Gav as mine always open with the grey windows and the small white one.

I have picked an unanswered BSOD thread at random - hope the member doesn't mind and I have gone through the process that I do and I have attached snips of what I get in order of EXAMPLES you will see in black print. I just hope they come in the rode I attach them which is hardly ever but that's another story.

Thso process happens on all mymachine bar the new HP laptop there is never a 7 zip screen come up just what you see

After following all your instructions I have WinDbg installed properly with the symbol path and file associations, verified as working with your test file. However, when I attempt to open the .dmp file in my Windows\Minidump folder after a BSOD this morning, I get this WinDbg error dialog: "You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the file owner or an administrator to obtain permission." I get this error either when double-clicking the dmp file, or when trying to open it from within WinDbg (X64). I am using an administrator account on Windows 10 Pro x64 "RTM" (10240) with latest updates as of August 6th. Any advice would be appreciated!

Sounds like you are trying to open it from it's root location, C:\Windows\Minidump.

Try moving it to the desktop before opening.

It wouldn't even let me copy it, let alone move it. I don't have permission. I have tried booting into safe mode as Administrator and still I don't have permission to read/copy/relocate the .dmp file in C:\Windows\Minidump. I am able to open this folder and see the .dmp file in the Explorer window, but do not have permission to read/copy/open the .dmp file itself.

When I said I could not read or copy the file, I also meant that cut/paste is not allowed. If you can imagine a procedure on Windows that requires reading a file, then I cannot do it with that .dmp file. Even in safe mode. Even after installing your reg fix that puts "Take Ownership" in the context menu (I used the "pause" version to insure that the action was successful. It says it was successful yet I still lack permission to read/copy/move/open this .dmp file.) The "Take Ownership" function in the context menu does not seem to work at all on this .dmp file. I will continue trying to get at this file. I do not understand why an Administrator account has such limited permissions in Win10 compared to Win7. (I skipped Win8 so I cannot comment on that.)

Thank you! It worked! I can access the .dmp file now. Is there a command I can enter in the command prompt to grab the files from C:\Windows\Minidump like that tool? Does it take ownership, or just circumvent permissions entirely?

You're welcome, I'm not sure what the command would be, I know it elevates to admin privileges, and then copies from root to desktop.

I installed the debugging tool in a non-system partition (E) as my system partition is almost full, and downloaded the symbol (Retail_x64) package as well. But when I run the test fill, I always get the "win32 error 0n193" error. I searched online but only find I should use a "correct debugger". I have also tried to follow the official instruction at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/315263. What's strange, the cd command does not even let me go into partition E. Nothing works out so far. Any idea?

Don't know if you have this but it is a very handy site to have for debugging

Colin just had to reinstall my Toshiba and one of the usual set ups is this tutorial.

Now I installed the original Pro version back on and I am not complaining but the dump when I click on it comes up instantaneously whereas the other machines have Debuggy not working or something similar flashing for a while would the Pro version be the reason for this. Like I say I am not complaining and I wish all my machines were as quick any thoughts??

PS the onlyother difference between thismachien and the others is that ithas the Samsung 850 Pro while the others have the 850 EVO.
