Winsxs on a rampage.. Solutions?

Got a PC in that has very little in terms of programs,documents, etc etc. Just a couple of programs that cant be reloaded at this time.

177GB in the winsxs folder and it filled up all of a sudden till 0 free space. Programs files isnt even 4gb as it doesnt have much in it.

Anybody got any ideas on this? No reason for windows to require that much stuff in storage.

I also see lots of posts that are saying the system doesnt know how to process it. How do I get the space back because it is marking it as used?

Your best solution is a full wipe and fresh reinstall of Windows, applications and drivers.

I would recommend leaving winsxs alone.
You can get into deep do do in a hurry messing with winsxs.

Well I managed to get 5gb cleared from other locations. 10 minutes later it's gone. Winsxs grabbed it up too. So it's not like I'm just freeing space. It's grabbing every bit of free space from me.

If we knew what kind of system we were working with it would help.

Also include what security programs and Power supply in your system specs.

Beware that some lately have developed problems using this tutorial because of all the B/S from Windows 10 updates.That is another reason to leave winsxs alone.

Not by it but it's a laptop I'm working on. Hp g62 celeron with 7hp sp1. Don't know what else would be of benefit to solve this issue. It does have kaspersky.

All you had to say was that you didn't have an answer. There is 0 updates to remove from it. Its all of the other stuff that all of a sudden shot up and used up 150gb free within a day.

It helped the issue but after letting the laptop idle for about 30 minutes it already ate up all the gained free space again. Wish someone would have some info on what its doing here. The computer wasn't even online and I did a chkdsk /r prior to this and it found no issues.

Process Monitor might show you what app is writing to winsxs.

Filter on Path > Contains > winsxs

So its HP quicklaunch. No clue what to do to clear it up tho. Atleast I know what program went crazy. Thanks for the above info.

You could ask HP about it. HP caused the problem. HP should solve the problem.

Back up your data. Format the drive. Install W7. Avoid HP bloatware.
