Yes , exactly - I have a running process that the icon will disappear and I want to make a short cut to show it .

Ok, so what do you need to do to the window?
Is it minimised and you want to restore / maximise it, or do you need to bring it to the front, or open it if not running etc?

The program is running but I can't access it , when I lose the icon . Usually I double click the icon in the hidden icon area by the clock / network icon . I need to make the same sort of shortcut that that icon does .

taskbar icons (Right side) can be set to always show.> show hidden icons> customise > always show.

left side when the prog is running right click on icon > pin to taskbar

what exactly is the program? many programs that behave this way will have a show/hide setting within.

Well just try setting your system tray to always show all icons. Other then that - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html and reset notification area. Then reset notification area (system tray) to always show all icons.

Edit: Also if the program is running try "Alt+TAB" to see if it shows up.

Re: Making a desktop shortcut to a running program is possible but if it's already running and you click the shortcut - what do you think will happen?

Either another instance will run or you'll get a message stating that it's already running.

IF the program is running full screen then the desktop will NOT be showing but the taskbar will be.
you will then have to use the show desktop block in the bottom right hand corner, if you've got it set,
easier to have it on the task bar in either case

Desktop shortcuts tend to be run programme
If its on the taskbar and 1 part of the prog is minimised then you will see "enveloped" multi progs running
on the left hand side of the taskbar, prime example are poker sites the table view is open but the lobby is minimised, but quickly accessable by hovering over the icon

I sort of gave up , The program is Virtual weather station , vws.exe and the icon will disappear from either the hidden icon area or on the task bar . But the program continues to run . I know this because it uploads the current conditions to the web ...

I am on my phone at the moment - so this will be brief.

Use Windows Explorer to locate the exe (probably in the program files folder).

Right-click on that exe and select Send to from the context menu...
...then select Desktop (create shortcut).

HI : I know how to do that , ( if I clicked the short cut on the desktop or anywhere , a new instant of the program will start , but will not be able to access the sensors ) . The program is running in the background but I can't view it without shutting it down then restarting it . Wanted to my a shortcut to the running program , not to run the program .

Sorry, I did not understood your original request.

You can make a batch file that stops the running app and lets you start a new (single) instance of the app. Or, there might be some command line switches that tell the app to not make a new instance and instead: open the currently running app.

Here is a thread that mentions doing that I suggested:

Kill the running app and restart a fresh instance via batch file.

It is really up to the program itself to be written in such a way that starting a second instance of the app brings up the window from first instance and then the second instance ends. I have several apps that do just that.

I might be able to make the window for the existing instance visible.

Could you try having VWS set to start in Startup, located in All Programs from the Start menu. Then set up a short cut from the VWS program itself & pin it to the Task Bar.

This should then start VWS when you start the computer & the Icon on the task bar should be slightly lit up & when ever you click on it it should take you straight to the running weather station.

I understand that your install is not freezing - but the batch file mentioned in that thread would crudely solve your problem.

Give Ranger4's excellent idea a try while I play with the app:
