Acronis 13 Clone Disc HD to SSD Questions

Hi,
I have decided to replace my failing HD w/ a SSD. My question is when I go to clone the disc using Acronis should I first format the SSD to NTSF or will the clone process do that for myself. If I have to format the SSD how do I go about that (I has been quite awhile)

from what I remember I go to>computer>manage>disc management and then what ?

Also my original HD had some bad sectors ,but seemed to still work fine, would I be ok in just making a clone of that? Or should I must I do a complete reinstall of the OS and all my software ( hope not). Also I did make a image of the HD when I first got the laptop would that Image still be ok to install ( did that in 2013)

It is not necessary to format the SSD first.

So just pop my new SSD in my external drive dock, plug the USB into the laptop then start the Acronis Clone disc and I'm good to go? Great, I like that way better

Yea well if the hdd has bad sectors you'd be best off doing a clean install and reinstalling all software not cloning.

What i did was to run the check drive for errors and found out the that bad sector was in a music file, So I deleted all the music off the HD and also all non essential software, photos , documents and videos. So what I will be installing is just the basics.

Will try doing the clone disk first, then run Dell's PC Doctor and see if anything bad shows up.

Cloning is hit and miss
If I were going to upgrade I would clean install load all updates and upgrade that
Then load any third party stuff after for the best upgrade chances

Too many issues can already happen on a upgrade and that's on a good day

Besides you'll still have the hdd to fall back on either way.

All I'm running on it now is Win7 64bit and Office, like I said I try it the way it is and if anything shows up I will do a fresh install. I basically only use the laptop for email , music and surfing the web. So its not loaded w/ tons of software.

as you know its just a pain (at least for myself) to have to re-install all the software.

Well do yourself a big favor and completely uninstall your antivirus program before upgrading
It will mess up the upgrade you can not just disable it
It must be reinstalled after.

Just wanted to ask what antivirus software did you have a problem with (Mcaffe perhaps)? I remember when I first got the laptop new it came pre-installed on in and that software was a royal PITA to get rid of.

Personally I have used Zone Alarm (paid) and never had a issue when doing a clone with that installed. But just to be on the safe side I will uninstall when I do it.

Well cloning an install is a lot different than upgrading to a very different os like win-10
So that's mainly why you would uninstall an antivirus program,

I believe everyone has made the mistake using Mcafee at one point or another
Mine was 6 years ago

But I use MSE and it should still be uninstalled if upgrading to win-10
10 has it's own security that replaces MSE's features and the install to 10 could have issues even with a M$ product.

I downgraded to Win 10, took a look at it for a few days and quickly upgraded back to Win 7 64bit Cloning vs imaging? Thought both were the same ? I do have a image also saved to a external HD, I could install using that way also, my only issue would be of course formatting the new SSD unless that would not be needed using a Acronis Image?

Cloning and imaging are decidedly different.

The term "cloning" is often used carelessly.

Imaging involves making an image file that is later restored.

Cloning does not make a file and nothing is later restored.

Cloning typically refers to an entire disk.

Imaging is done on a partition-by-partition basis--one or more of the partitions on a disk. Maybe all partitions on a disk, maybe not.

Cloning is a real-time copying of one disc to another. Imaging is not.

Imaging is a legitimate backup strategy. Cloning is not.

Neither cloning nor imaging requires that the destination disk be formatted. The necessary formatting is carried out behind the scenes as part of the process.
