Solved Modifing old desktop machine in new case

Acer glued it on

I think sometimes the thermal paste needs a bit of a warm up before removing the old cooler. Then let the CPU cool down before cleaning with high purity iso propyl alcohol. My old Acer had a quad Intel 8300 and the cooler was fine after a clean and a thermal paste reseat. The EVO 212 heat sink is what i have on my current PC and is a low cost great alternative.

The actual old cooler moved as soon as I loosened the third screw so the paste on it was not holding anything
It was the old cpu mounting bracket on the back of the board that was the most fun to get off

and also replaced the thermal paste on the other little doo-da to under it

You put TIM Paste on the backplate, or thermal pads/rubber?

I'm talking about the second little vented aluminum block directly under the cpu cooler I believe it's the chipset I cleaned and repasted it.

The new cpu mounting bracket is a lot different than the old cpu mounting bracket,
The old one that was glued on is flat and did have a double stick tape pad on it but they also glued it too
The new mounting plate only touches the back of the mother board where the bolts go though it
Cooler master didn't supply anything to be between the 2 surfaces so I just cut the corners off the old rubber pad and use it.
So no I did not use thermal paste on the back mounting plate

Ah okay, was making sure you did not put thermal compound back there as that's asking for issues.

Nope not even a caveman like myself would do that
Acer on the other hand ? they obviously used some type of superman adhesive on the back plate so I can see why Michael reused the old cpu cooler and just repasted it
I almost did the same but flipped a coin then 2 out of 3 and removed the old one any way

Done just a couple more fans 1 for the bottom and 1 for the 980 hybrid radiator

Temps so far hovering at 38c

Nice coloring with the green and black. Those are really good temps.

Thanks yea since the Acer board is green it seemed like a nice choice in colors

Only freaky part was cutting the back of the old case out so I would have a trim plate for the ports to the mother board
Worked out pretty well

Temps wise looks like the thermal paste is working
That 38c is only 12c more than my liquid coolers temps which hover at 26c

Cpu is installed and windows shows it Q9550

Bad thing is the ram give a continuous beep and power on and nothing
Old ram works of course it's at 800Mhz and the new is 1333Mhz so I'm guessing either the bios need to be adjusted or the ram is bad or flat out the wrong Mhz ?
Here the mobo spec's and compatible upgrades :/

Can you test the sticks in another of your pcs? The bios is not set to a set ram setting right it's on auto? You might want to try resetting your cmos first and what model is the old ram?

This is what Crucial says an upgrade would be
2GB DDR3 PC3-12800 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.5V 256Meg x 64 upgrades for null null, [Ljava.lang.String;@57a157a1 from Crucial.com

After chatting with Crucial the ram I have is 1600Mhz so the 1333Mhz is a downgrade and not supported anyway so my old ram is good enough
If anything I could of gotten 1600Mhz G-Skill :/
It's as high of ram the board can take no matter what cpu is in it so I'm guessing

Temps so far hovering at 38c

Had to look back to see what the temps were before
Now with the new cpu are hovering at 41c that seems to be the system temp not the cpu temp
Same for the previous 38c was.

Everything seems okay and pretty quick
New wei score jump from the previous 6.0

Switched out the 212 EVO for a NH-D14 and temps are way better and stable
Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler - Newegg.com

Considering the load and MHz the NH-D14 is doing a much better job than the 212 EVO.
Much much cooler using the NH-D14. Money well spent.

Even the GPU is 5C cooler.
