How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

Although I have some hidden updates I'm not really hiding anymore it does little good for some so I just leave them sitting
They do come with a date of release and all you need to do is click on the update and it shows

Eventually I probably will uncheck search for optional software that alone will stop most of them from being offered,
If it weren't for office 2007 I would of done it years ago

Same here Thrash, the only reason I have it to check for other software updates is because I also use Office 2007 same as you.
If I skip every update on the basis it "could" contain something unwanted then my list would be huge

There are never that many updates offered that you can`t check each one`s description, Tuesdays, well there could be a few more, but no big deal.

Well worth it to check each one over

Not every update is needed anyway and why add something you don`t need.

Yep using the key word "Optional" is as clear as can be
In reality even Recommended updates are optional simply uncheck give me recommended updates the same way as important makes life a little less confusing when updates show up

All seriousness aside, it doesn't take all that long to check each update against my Specialized High Intensity Training List, then check each one left with MS to see what it does. If the description is vague, it will not get downloaded and installed. The day I find out MSpy lies to us (even if only by omission) about what an update does is the day I quite downloading and installing all of them them and pray fervently that my antivirus and Anti-malware programs will protect me. MSpy has been doing its darnedest to drive me away from them and, if this crap escalates, it will succeed; I'm sure I will have plenty of company.

Well I skipped Windows 8 and by the look of things I won't be jumping on the 10 train. Nothing in it has impressed me so far.
When it comes to 7's end of life, I'll have to look at other options. Linux Zorin or Mint is looking the favourite for me at the moment. I've got a few years to start planning though.

That's one of the options I'm considering. I have plenty of time to make a decision.

So, I went ahead and installed all the Windows Update Client updates:

From what it says on the WU settings page, and in its Privacy Policy, we may not have a choice where WU is concerned. Just by asking WU to search for new updates, MS is allowed to update the WU software before making the search.

Posted those 2 a few weeks ago thrash. Those were optional but they came back as recommended (as I said they would).

I know what you mean about no longer hiding them. It's starting to make me want to completely turn off Windows Update.

If it wasn't for so many security updates, I wouldn't even use it.

Shouldn't MS provide some sort of a link to turn off the W10 upgrade when users of W7/8 change their mind. Sort of an OPT IN/OUT?

Thanks to all who posted the updates in this thread, related to this windows 10 updates rubbish in 7.

I thought I stopped most of them but found I had a least three of them and now uninstalled them. They were installed months ago, before all this windows 10 kicked off.

Microsoft are sly at tricking people into installing these updates when they do nothing for windows 7, other than spy on us. I will never upgrade to windows 10 and windows 10 is an abuse of privacy. I don't want the spy stuff or windows 10 nonsense in my windows 7.

Need to keep it updated so we can all avoid the worst or Microsoft windows 10 to 7 spying updates. Plenty around the web about it but not all the updates are shown, that we don't want.

The "Important/recommended" updates can't even be used as guidance anymore. Some of the security update requires optional update to fix the security update caused problems. I haven't noticed this on W7, but did on W8.1; quote from the optional KB3092627:

This article describes an issue in which programs or Windows may freeze after you install security update 3076895

One would really need to dig deep to see what the referenced non-security update does and if it is necessary for the system.

Seeing that MS keeps at pushing out updates for prior versions of Windows, that includes compatibility and telemetry patches, it must be important for them. Microsoft wouldn't spend money on developing patches that does not result in a positive ROI on the long run. To put it in perspective...

A month after the release of Windows 10 RTM, it's market share is 5.21%, or about 75 million computers. The majority of them were updates and for simplicity sake, let's go with this number. Traditionally, each update used cost about $100 that translates into $7.5B lost income for the free updates. If anyone believes that a corporation would give away this kind of money, I have a bridge to sell you...

Some, such as the Russian time zone update, actually did cause problems for some computers. since I'm as likely to be computing in Russia as on the moon, there was no need for me to download that update and risk running into problems.

I disagree and feel the tilting at windmills analogy is invalid. Most of the spyware and nagware updates, once blocked, stay blocked. It's only a few of the ones I've put on my Specialized High Intensity Training list that have been repeated and most of them were repeated only a few times so blocking them was not futile. And, even I have to keep rejecting the blasted things, I will continue to do so. It's sheeple who roll over and take MSpy's abuse of power that gives them the justification to keep doing so.
