Solved Repair Install Win 7 Pro from Non SP1 Disc using a new Win 7 Pro SP1 d

Hi derekimo,

Ok I will install the SP1 update (I was just a bit wiery of it as I already have SP1 installed.

Regarding the system devices I will post a screenshot of that tonight aswell as the sound devices.

I do believe the locked directories, 1 being windows.old, when I say they're locked they appear like a hidden file/folder with a padlock icon but I believe I can open them.

The other directory is called something similar too "in line repair install" both being about 900mb in size.

Many thanks for your assistance the pc is running, just gotta test my games to see if they are running correctly.

Is there a link to a clean install guide for Windows 7 SP1 just like the repair install or did I not scroll down that page enough to see another guide.

Just for future reference.

Hi derekimo,

I didn't have a windows.old folder. I had to folders which are which were created when I did the repair install. I followed the steps at the end of the repair install guide, by running a disk cleanup and selecting them to be removed.

However I reinstalled my graphics and tried to refresh my windows experience index, it gets all the way through to doing the media decoding & then stops with an error saying "unable to assess the video playback performance".

Did a search on Google and it says that, that part of the test tries to access 8 files located in the Windows>performance>winstat folder but the media files are there.

Anyway it doesn't worry me about the windows score, as that doesn't effect anything performance wise, and the game I was trying to get fixed & running ok.

Hi guys.
Sorry to break in, but your comments about 'COEM' got relayed to me, and it's the first I'd ever heard of either MS offering downloads for OEM, and the first time that I'd ever heard the term COEM.

Once the repair install is properly activated, can you please post an MGADiag report so I can see if there's anything odd/new about it?

I need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Is there something bad about this download? It comes from the Microsoft website so I assumed it was safe.

Is it not a legitimate copy of windows

Nothing wrong with it at all - it's merely that I'd like to see a report from such a download to confirm that it shows absolutely no difference from a standard disk. It's mostly surprise that MS have done an about-face in their approach to OEM installs.

Nice to see that MS have apparently decided that people need to be kept happy about their current machines, as well as trying to get them to upgrade to 10.

Ok I will do the test and report back.

It is very nice of MS to offer a full legal copy of Windows 7 with SP1 as I would never use anything other than legitimate windows and was faced with having to buy a new Windows 7 with SP1 but instead got a free download and just burned it to disc.

The only thing I would have to say I've noticed, is the Windows Experience Index will crash on the Video Encoding giving and error "video playback not available (I think that's the error message), but my video card is function fine in games.

Today was the 1st time I tried to re-run the test since I did the repair install as it says " new hardware detected". Clicked refresh and also re-run assessment and it always comes back with that error when it gets to the encoding.

That sounds as if there is a driver conflict somewhere - have you updated both the graphics driver and Windows?

I ran a repair install on my windows and then uninstalled and reinstalled my video drivers.

I used driver fusion to remove traces of the drivers but it said I needed the paid version to remove some of them.

I might try driver sweeper tonight to uninstall & wipe the drivers and reinstall them again.

Have always used driver sweeper, as its free and does a good job. Is it safe to use on win 7 as I read somewhere that it may also remove windows files.

A few months ago I inadvertently set my CPU voltage to 1.8v mistakenly started up the pc and quickly restarted and changed it back to auto voltage.

Pc is running fine except I've had no amount of problems trying to get flight simulator x running properly without freezing.

I didn't noticed my voltage go over 1.232 with AIDA64 when I had it set to 1.8v so I hope I didn't damage the CPU. Temps on startup remained normal so I guess if I had put it under stress it would have fried.

I'm not a fan of third-party cleanup tools - but NVidia are useless at providing a decent tool

This appears to be the latest set of NVidia default drivers... Download NVIDIA, GeForce, Quadro, and Tesla Drivers
...which is a bit later than Gigabyte's offering! GIGABYTE - Graphics Card - NVIDIA - PCI Express Solution - GeForce 8 series - Legacy - GV-NX88T512HP

As to decent cleanup, this is probably the best for NVIDIA Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 15.4.1.1 (I'm not too certain about the hosts, though - make sure that you install carefully, and reject any offers of ancillary software. Download using the link in the list at the BOTTOM of the page, not from any of the shiny sucker-buttons!)

Hi Noel.

Umm the link you provided for drivers is for geforce 8 series cards I have GTX 970.

Also I have used DDU but how do you use it properly as itt will reboot in safe mode.

Also regarding my previous post my CPU should be fine and not damaged correct? It's working fine I believe.

I don't know enough about hardware to comment on the voltage issue - so I'll refrain for now (Derek should be able to give a better response than me anyhow)

I was going from the spec in your sig? Gigabyte 8800GT 512 PCI-E
NVidia have these available - NVIDIA DRIVERS GeForce Game Ready Driver WHQL - for the GTX 970

Driver uninstalls are possibly best done in Safe Mode - is there a problem there for you?

Hello, boeingaviation. It's really difficult to tell you if your 1.8V vcore damaged your CPU. The voltage is usually a max voltage and it depends on how much it actually pulled at any one time. I suspect there are only a few motherboards that could deliver that much voltage anyway, which would be another concern. If it pulled close to that, it could have damaged the motherboard as well. But with it running reasonably well it most likely is OK. I would make sure everything is set to default values and no overclocking for a while.

look in the root of your C drive and see if there is a folder named Nvidia there (C:/Nvidia). If there is, just download the new driver and keep it on your desktop. Then, follow this tutorial and install only the Display driver and the PhysX driver, nothing else. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/327414-nvidia-drivers-avoid-problems.html

Please keep a close watch on your CPU and GPU temps while playing.

Thanks for your reply. On the whole the CPU is running fine. FSX is the only game I have a problem with where it will hang/freeze after some time of flying but I think that maybe related to software.

When I did overvolt the CPU I did not notice temps any different to before so maybe it didn't actually get to 1.8v as I have an entry level Asus ROG Maximus VII Ranger board.

I can run prepar3d no problems at all and max temp in game on stock CPU speed of 4.4ghz is 48c.

I ran the WEI test and got almost to the completion but it came back with an error saying windows could not complete the test as a component or software driver was preventing it.

Now before trying to rung that when the graphics drivers were installed it failed at the "video encoding, & gave error message " cannot measure video playback performance....... Which leads me to believe I may have a faulty graphics card as it flew past this with just the standard on board graphics after I uninstalled the nvidia drivers.

What happens with FSX is that after about 10 mins of flying with multiple view changes and minimizing and restoring the FSX window, it will freeze when I try tonreopen it and all I can see is the top menu bar & the windows taskbar but in-between where the game screen should be is just showing the windows 7 desktop wallpaper.

I honestly hope I haven't damaged anything, I have the devils canyon 4790k chip. I have even tried downclocking from its standard speed to 3.8ghz and leaving the voltage alone but get the same problem.

I can run prepar3d fine now, I have been in contact with EVGA who make my GTX 970 & the suggested I RMA the card as they think there may be a faulty fan module.

   Information
Your System Specs will help us to help you, and doing it in this manner will make them available to all helpers in every post and keep us from hunting for them. We ask that you fill them out in as much detail as possible including Desktop or Laptop, Model number if it is an OEM computer and all components with the Manufacturer and Model number if possible.

If you will go to your last post and click the 'System Specs' in the bottom left of the post, you will find a link to update your system specs. Please fill those out in as much detail as possible, making sure to click save at the bottom of the page. If you would like to know what we would like, you can click 'My System Specs' at the bottom left of this post to see mine. If you do not know what your components are, this will help you accomplish this task. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

That would sure help us. If EVGA recommended you RMA the card, I would do so. Their tech support is excellent.
