Thinking of building a custom computer

OK, so as an over-view, here are the parts already ordered.

Case (Talked down to $60 - free shipping): Gateway 2000 Baby at P5 75 Desktop Computer Free SHIP | eBay

Motherboard with I/O shield (Talked down to $35 - free shipping):
Intel Desktop Board DQ67OW LGA1155 Motherboard with Shield | eBay

i5 Processor with heat sink and fan ($95):
Intel Core i5 2310 2 90 GHz CPU Processor LGA1155 SR02K | eBay

4 GB RAM ($25):
4GB 2x2GB Memory RAM for Intel DQ67EP DQ67SW DQ67OW DX58OG DX58SO Mainboard | eBay

500 Watt ATX Power supply (Even has FDD power cable - $25 w/ship):
I-500 Coolmax 500W ATX 12V V2.0 Power Supply - Desktop Power Supply - SuperBiiz.com

I also purchased a floppy ribbon and some SATA cables. I just need to get a Windows 7 DVD/Key and SSD (around 250 GB) and I should be set! I think I'm doing alright so far, but someone call me out if they think I'm doing something stupid! Don't be afraid to "shoot me down"... ;)

Dude i could of mailed you a 600w HP High E PSU lol Coolmax good luck on that

Thanks for offering! The cheap price made me nervous, but I guess it will be worth it if it lasts at least one year. It's got a one year warranty, so they'd have to replace it! I am using the built in video, so I really don't need anything powerful. Hopefully it will hold up a little while. The power supply arrived today, it only took it 2 days from the order date to deliver! The only thing that sucks is that it only has 2 SATA power cables. Is there an adapter to make an older style ATA 4-pin connector work on an SATA drive? 2 is enough, but not if I want to add another drive later on.

All that's left is to buy an SSD. I'm looking at the 250 GB Samsung posted earlier, and I should be set! Never had a solid state drive. I can't wait for the speed increase!

I paid a couple extra bucks to bump it up from a 400 watt to a 500. Not that I'll ever need that much. All I plan on running is one SATA SSD, one SATA DVD+RW, one 3.5 floppy drive, and the internal graphics, with an i5 processor.

Speaking of the disk drive, does anyone, anywhere, sell a white colored CD/DVD burner drive with SATA connections? I've searched and searched, to no avail.

So parts have started arriving! Sorry in advanced for all the photos. I usually browse a car forum, and I am used to everyone being picture-hungry! :P For some reason, the forum isn't uploading them automatically. I'll have to use photobucket.com

My "lab":

URL%5D

I've almost entirely gutted the Gateway (just the motherboard is left), and the Coolmax power supply is here. The label was applied upside down... :) I've already added the PSU, and jumped two leads to test it. It sure is super quiet! Now, my only concern is that the airflow from the back seems really low, especially considering the giant fan. As you can see, the case luckily has another fan built into the front. I'll have to replace it at some point, because it is super loud!

Here is the new PSU, installed:

Photo bucket usually compresses files on upload unless you have a paid for account PB will allow uploading the original file without compression happening,

This forum also compresses files over 1mb so it may have stalled with so many at once although 5 is the limit per post :/

(Almost) All back together now! :D

The back still needs some work. Perhaps a piece of sheet metal patched in here would do nicely.

All of the parts seem to be operating now.

I gave up on finding a white SATA drive. Now I just need to paint the drive white.

Boots up fine from the internal 3.5 floppy.

Here's BIOS.

It also booted from the Win. 7 disk, but all I need now is the SSD and a 3.5 in. mounting bracket. Looks like it will mount in next to the floppy drive well.

The only issue is that I used plastic motherboard standoffs, and the board is some-what wobbly. I'll need to purchase actual metal standoffs here soon. All else seems to be good to go! :D

Thanks guys!

I would have loved to have gone for the 500 GB one, but the price was out of my budget. I'm only using just over 100 GB of space on my current computer, so I went for the 250 GB drive.

Both my Samsung's are 500gb evo ssd's 1 unused waiting for 10 to mature for an outright buy so I've discounted any upgrading nonsense ;)

Just a thought but are you sure the PSU label was upside down ? im wondering if you have installed the PSU upside down which would pull air through it the wrong way around and prob wont cool as well as it should
Worth double checking

The majority of oem psu's pull air from the inside and exhaust out the back so I doubt that's a big deal the old baby might need a little more cooling or air pull :)

That would freak some people out putting win-10 on it though :D
