I've always used AVG free for home use, but recently have been trying Microsoft Security Essentials.

AVG seems to have got more and more bloated over the years, and it's a refreshing change to use an application that is so lightweight, and seems to do the job very well as well

Man I could've sworn that when I went on the AVG website it didn't have a check in the Rootkit Protection box...:sarc:

Good to see that check is there after all!

And yeah its true, AVG has gotten pretty bloated...

Not actually! AVG since the 8.0 now includes the optional IE security bar for trojan alerts when some site attempts to stick something on your system! Norton is the one with the "bloatation" rep there.

Hello everyone!
I just started using windows 7 and free trial of norton that came with the system. I know that norton isn't an antivirus liked in general, but needed to have some protection before I find any other program. My previous computer had windows xp and I used free avg, but had problems with it - the scan never ended - so I don't know if I should give it another try. Anybody else experienced this issue? I was looking into microsoft security essentials and can't decide whether to try this one or go back to avg? What do you guys suggest? Thanks in advance.

Hello topazzz Welcome to the Se7en Forums!

With the AVG 8.5 was already on here when going for the MS Essentials tool. There was no clash seeing that added onto the system here with other protections already in use.

The 9.0 release will be going onto the retail 7 once that has arrived and goes on the system as well as the other protections including the MS Essentials which acts more like a scanner/alert mechanism not an antivirus program while there is a containment option. Even when someone passed along a link in the Windows Live Messenger the MS tool prompted as well as the usual warning seen in the messenger window itself showing it covers areas other programs are not able to!

The most likely reason for the continual scan once started in XP there may have been the full system scan setting rather then having it set to the quick scan option. Once you started a scan that was a more thorough system wide scan over all drives if you had more then one hard drive in there.

When I started my new job about 3 months ago, the pcs were using AVG. Mine was sluggish and I knew something was amiss. I installed NOD32 and ran a scan. It found over 80 infected files. I then had to reinstall windows. AVG might be free but you'll never see me using it ever again

Someone probably had AVG disabled from the startup list otherwise it would have flagged them right off. I've been using AVG right along for several years already and it's never missed any virus thrown at it to date!

The IE security toolbar is another plus for AVG there first seen with the 8.0 build as an optional protection for IE users. That will catch bugs any bad site attempts to place on your system with it's own alert system.

But the hard facts are most infections are the result of user/operators ignoring things! I've intentionally let loose a few viruses in order to test how well past free editions of AVG worked as far as detection. AVG found every last file infected in no time with a simple quick scan!

I am not very savvy in computers and can't say if I had more than one hard drive on my previous machine, but I don't think so. Nevertheless sometimes there is a need to run a deep scan, I guess you can't rely on the fast scan only. I had no problems with earlier versions of avg before they incorporated the rootkit scan with the antivirus and liked it a lot.

I don't know if I understood you right about the ms essential - you mean it's not really antivirus software?

Same here - MSE is now for me.

The new MS essentials is nothing like an antivirus program where you have to remove one for the other. This new program more or less is a scanning program with some form of active watch. You'll see an alert come up if anything is detected.

The three main options are notification only, quaranteen, and do nothing. With your typical antivirus software on the other hand one program's installer will even remove another program for you in order to be the dominant protection since one will conflist with any other program installed.

The latest 9.0 is still AVG but simply a newer 8.37 build. You'll see that number when going to download it to a folder. It went right the retail 7 install here without even noticing any difference between the latest and the 8.0 and 8.5 builds due to the IE security bar option or even the last few prior to those without the added protection there.
