Millions of Internet Explorer users must update, or lose patches

Millions of Internet Explorer users have just five weeks to upgrade to a newer browser before security patches dry up.

Microsoft blasted a reminder to users earlier this week that after January 12 there will be no more patches to protect against drive-by downloads and other browser vulnerabilities.

As many as 124 million users are running Internet Explorer 10 and earlier, and must update to a newer browser, according to the US Digital Analytics program.

Most of the users are still running Internet Explorer 9, the statistics show, indicating a good portion of users still running Windows 7.

Frankly...this strikes me as being just another vector of 'strong-arm tactic' by M$ to further push people into using their Win 10 OS. I use FF and haven't bothered with IE for quite some time now, even though I have IE11 on this machine.

IE11 will continue to be supported for a while. If MSpy discontinues support for it before 1/14/2020, I'm getting a lawyer.

I've never really tested turning off ie of any version to see if the update system is effected or not

I haven't used Internet Explorer as my main browser for some years. But I thought IE was still required for some OS download capability ??? So if you kick it in the bin are there any consequences?

I disabled IE via a registry hack rather than via "turn off windows features" but windows updates might require IE to be enabled for some updates to download and install correctly (I think) but I stand to be corrected on that.

I eventually decided that it's best to leave IE enabled even if I don't make much use if it. I do sometimes download a standalone installer for a windows update from Microsoft Update Catalog and that only works with IE.

Just found out something brilliant about ie11,
It blocks an M$ site to include other M$ software updates like Office in my case 2007 from being offered lol

You just can't make this stuff up and it was an issue in 2013 :shock: and still is I just had to uninstall ie11 to get my office 2007 updates :roflmao:

Thank God I have Office 2010. I get those updates every month.

Yea I usually would too but I just installed on a new copy of 7 pro and did not choose to use windows updates after the install Oops,

Well usually that would not be a big deal but with ie11 installed had me wondering what the heck is going on that the link takes me to a page to use the start button search to check for updates instead of the agreement page and to use my existing update settings

What am I going to have to use now... unlike in America, here in Korea, you NEED Internet Explorer to buy anything online because a lot of credit card companies require you to download a ActiveX control that "protects" you. I hope Microsoft continues updating IE11 until ActiveX controls are completely obsolete.

It's not that. Windows Update uses IE natively. Most people use WU to update, and don't download updates separately. Even if you turn IE off, WU still uses it. Although I don't know if a WU update couldn't use the latest version automatically, regardless of what version of IE you use.

Windows Internet Explorer (IE) is an integral part of the operating system (OS) and is used in many 'background' OS activities.

Besides A Guy's example; Another example would be sending error reports back to microsoft (think telemetry); Which browser do you think microsoft would want to use, IE, Firefox or Chrome?

I was trying to hold this IE update off as long as I could (IE10 to IE11) because I had many file association problems when I updated to IE10 but I fear I am being required to forge ahead.

Oh Well, time to bite the bullet, and I will let you know how it turns out... Onward, and Upward!

I've been quite happy with IE11. The only problems I've had with it are because of lazy or incompetent web page designers who wouldn't or couldn't design their pages to be compatible with IE11 (and most of them have finally gotten on board). What worries me is the way MSpy has been doing their best to force us off Win 7 onto Win 10 and Edge. It wouldn't surprise me if the clowns decided to discontinue IE11 before Win 7's EOL since I don't like any other browsers I've tried, especially FireFox and Chrome.

ie11 just like ie10 seems to crash quite a bit with some sites like Newegg.... pretty annoying actually

But when ie11 messes with the windows update system I have to draw a line and say goodbye
I reinstalled ie10 and it will stay that way unused for the most part.

I'm happy with Pale Moon 64 bit
