TeraCopy has trouble working with some Macrium Reflect mounted images

I use Macrium Reflect Professional v.5 to image my disks. When those images are mounted, they can be browsed under Windows Explorer, files can be opened and copied to another partition. They can also be copied with TeraCopy.

Now I have run into some images which, although they work as expected when mounted under Windows Explorer (Windows copy and paste works), fail when folder copy and paste is attempted either with TeraCopy or RichCopy. However, files can be copied with TeraCopy.

The following has been attempted to no avail :

- Re-verify the image with Macrium (it's OK).
- Run TeraCopy as administrator.
- Attempt copy under a Windows user account with admin rights.
- Shut down Avira antivirus real-time shields.
- Downgrade TeraCopy from the current 2.3 version to the 2.27 version (someone suggested that 2.3 had problems with Windows 7 x64).

The reluctant folders, once mounted, have a read-only mark (which is supposed to apply only to the contained files). However, the included files are not read-only. I tried to uncheck this, but it failed.

Any ideas ? Thanks !

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen (plural rhetorical, obviously).

Callender,

I'll try Lockhunter, whose existence I was not aware of. Do you mean I should use it on mounted folders from a Macrium image ?

The read-only warning you showed on your folder is exactly the one I get. However, this seems to be an application folder, so maybe read-only is to be expected ? My folders also contain documents.

Looks like a TeraCopy problem. I would complain to them.

The same thing is happening to me with TeraCopy and RichCopy, which suggests maybe there's something else. TeraCopy does have a "ticket" space on its site, but I doubt it's available to non-paying users. Help is almost non-existent and I don't see a dedicated forum anywhere.

Teracopy was great when I was using XP but I had nothing but problems with it when I switched to Win 7. (Lady Fitzgerald)
I read many variations of that gripe. The problem is that we should even need something like TeraCopy. After some research, I learnt that Windows lacked a properly working copy function... and also a properly working search function. That's only two of the most basic functions of any operating system... I have to supplement Windows "search" with Everything, and it works like a charm... blazing fast, too.

Yes, just to see if it reports that they are locked and in use and therefore not able to be copied.

Have you by any chance taken ownership of your %localappdata% folder (or c:\users\username\appdata\local) at some point in the past?

EDIT:

Also re: application folder.

Hopefully you are not looking at a shortcut - right?

I don't think so, although I did mess with permissions and taking ownership in some places in the past, and decided to refrain from it as much as possible, because a) it's horribly complex, b) apparently there's no way to revert to default settings. So it's a possibility.

Just in case it's relevant, my user profiles are on D: and my system is on C:.

A permissions issue was my first idea, since it appears I can copy the files that are in a folder, but not the folder itself.

Which drives have you imaged using Macrium Reflect? If you imaged C: and your user profile is on D: maybe that's the problem. I used to move my documents off my windows partition but that's no longer the case.

Here's something to try.

Create a folder with the same name as the problem folder on your C: drive.

Mount your Macruim Reflect image and attempt to copy the problem folder via Xcopy from an Elevated Command Prompt. Does it work?

Example from my machine:

Copy a folder from D:\FF Backups to an empty folder here C:\Users\Chris\Desktop\FF Backups

Code:
xcopy "D:\FF Backups" "C:\Users\Chris\Desktop\FF Backups" /c /d /h /i /k /q /r /s /x /y

Where an empty folder named FF Backups exists in destination on C:

Quotes are needed if path contains spaces.

Xcopy Elevated Command Prompt.jpg

EDIT:

Sorry - forget that. You want to copy a folder. This method only works if you create an empty folder in the destination first.

I imaged both disks, and am currently restoring from D:.

This has been done according to the Sysprep-Kari method described at length here in 7-Forums, and it's precisely done to enable independent restoring of system and data.

In fact, I'm not even trying to restore an image of D:. Just to restore selectively my hand-picked data folders after a clean install. ProgramData and AppData's have already been built up from scratch all over again on D:, all lovingly crafted by hand. ;)

Okay. I don't have the same setup but I tested using PC Hunter.

Mount Macrium Reflect image and browse it using PC Hunter. Navigate using the "File" tab to your problem folder and right click on it in the left pane. If nothing shows up in the right pane (folder contents) then it must be a junction point. In that case try to locate the actual folder rather than the junction point. If contents do actually show up try copying the folder and select destination and see if it copies intact.

Just to add - my own strategy for restoring missing files after rolling back system to a previous image.

Copy current system before rolling back (image with Macrium Reflect) let's call it System Image A

Restore old working system image.

Mount System Image A and copy any missing or changed files that do not exist in current image from System Image A using TSR Copy Changed Files.

Note: Work one directory at a time - usually you are interested in personal stuff, documents etc - and "test copy" first - no files are copied but you see a log of expected results. If happy - go ahead and copy.

See: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...estination-files-post2913238.html#post2913238

Sorry for all the suggestions but maybe something will actually work for you!

Wow, that program looks like dynamite... I wouldn't touch it without supervision. So, to report :

  • Nothing showed up in the right pane when I right-clicked on folders of folders -- but I presume this is normal, and not the sign that they were junction points.
  • Files showed indeed on the right pane when I right-clicked on folders of files.
  • I copied one bottom-level folder with a few files, and a middle-level folder with 36 nested folders and 371 files -- 1,42 GB total.
  • There are no missing files as far as I can make it, and all those I checked opened correctly.
Thanks for TRS Copy Changed Files and Win Merge, that's something I had been looking for, and your associated strategy might also be very helpful at some other point.

(I suppose Sync Back Free could also be used to that effect ? It can simulate restore before execution, and it can verify the copy with a MD5 hash.)

FreeFileSync (FFS) is the one I use for backing up my data files. There is a simple hack that will allow FFS to verify files it copies.

Can I have that simple hack? I use FreeFileSync a lot during every week.

If I recall correctly, you go into AppData, click on FreeFileSync, then click on GlobalSettings.xml. A little ways from the top is this entry:

<VerifyCopiedFiles Enabled="false"/>

Change the "false" to "true", then save and close the file.

You may have to do this two or three times to get it to "stick". Be aware that this hack will almost double the time it takes to run a backup because of the extra time it takes to verify each copy operation.

LadyF: Got it, thanks! "...RAID is NOT a backup!" -- makes for a good bug spray though :)
Back on some of the original topic:
-- sources recommend not splitting Windows Prime [such as OS and/or Users and/or My Documents] into C-partition and D-partition operations. I left My Documents alone, and have been for years "tellling" each program to save its stuff onto D-partition.
-- I recommend TeraCopy be simply used during normal copy/move operations that would be handled by Explorer.exe.
I remember it playing not too well under some circumstances, however, been too long, can't remember what circumstances.

The only thing I moved from my C: drive to E: were my Documents, Music, and Pictures folders. That might have caused a problem if I wqs using Windows Backup but I don't and it hasn't been a problem for me when using Macrium Reflect and FFS.

Wow, that program looks like dynamite... I wouldn't touch it without supervision.

Yes it's best used for certain problems only!

I've never used Sync Back so can't comment.

RE: PCHunter - if it copied a folder intact when Teracopy could not copy the same folder then the problem appears to lie with Teracopy. I'm not sure what the problem could be. A good test might be to remove Explorer Integration (Shell Integration) via Teracopy's menu then fully uninstall it using something like GeekUninstaller and allow Geek Uninstaller to scan for and remove leftovers. Reboot - Run Ccleaner then download a fresh copy of Teracopy and install it to see if you get the same problem.

Just for info and comparision:

I'm using Teracopy 2.2 x 64

I use a program/ file/ shortcut launcher and launch it from "C:\Program Files\TeraCopy\TeraCopy.exe"

Shell Integration is disabled. I just drag and drop folders/ files into the GUI.

I use an Admin account with UAC disabled (UAC has been replaced by something else)
