Startup can't repair itself. ME is in recovery mode!

Let's try a different angle then. Do you have any personal files on C: drive of the Thinkpad or hopefully the C: drive is only Win 7 and your personal files are on a different partition?

There is only one usable drive on my Thinkpad. That is the C drive with both windows and all my stuff in it. The other is a recovery partition.

Edit: What would happen if I just used Ubuntu to simply copy the entire C drive onto my external HDD? Would things like the files inside program files, documents, pictures/etc survive? I won't be using this back up to restore anything anyway. I am expecting to manually install all my programs in my fresh windows install anyway. I'd be fine as long as I can access the AppData, Program files, saved docs/images/etc. For example, I'd love to retain various config files of certain software, icons/logs/etc that are now present inside the AppData folder.

That would work to save your Personal Files. As I said, I do not think Reinstalling Windows will help your problem. == So that you will not be exposing your personal files in the future, you should put you Win 7 and programs on the C: drive and make another partition to put your personal files on. This way you can reinstall Windows at anytime and not worry about your personal files. == When you get this problem corrected I suggest strongly that you start using Macrium Reflect to make an Image weekly so you do not risk losing your files again. Good Luck

Hi buddy,

So I have decided what to do. I will buy a 1 TB internal HDD for my laptop tomorrow. My current one is 500 GB. Then, I will install windows on it. After that is done, I will plug in my old HDD using the usb adapter and transfer the files I need. It will probably take 2-4 transfers for me to be comfortable with deleting everything on that HDD. So, I will start fresh with a new HDD.

What kind of split do you recommend for the partitioning? 300-350 GB for C and 650-700 GB for D? Would that work fine? Could I also install programs in the D drive if I think I am using up the C drive?

I don't think that a fresh install will solve the ME error. I wasn't suggesting that. However, my OS went bad. I think a fresh install will at least help me with using the computer. The people I found online who were talking about this ME error, a lot of them could still use their computers. They just had to see the ME error before boot.

Got my new HDD and installed windows 7 professional on it. Now I have 2 problems:

1. Just how in the world did the Windows installation turn Lenovo???? Please view the screenshots:

2. My PC doesn't seem to have any connection to the internet. Do I have to install all the drivers manually now? :O I expected windows to be able to use my wifi card at least for now.

Strangely, it didnt ask me for the product key for this installation.

P.S. Plugging in a USB stick is doing nothing. I have tested the stick with other computers. How am I supposed to install the drivers this way!

Update: I used ubuntu live disk to downlaod the necessary drivers onto the c drive and went from there. It worked. However, I have a new problem. I think I was given a cracked copy of windows.
