How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

What I see (Which is just my opinion) the cause of driver update is having both driver update software enabled & Windows Update Driver installation also enabled. This will usually cause a conflict. The drivers in most cases are actually the same no matter where you get it from.

I guess it depends on what experiences you have had. While others mention graphics drivers explicitly, others that are common include

-Audio Drivers
-NIC drivers

As per the included article quote, the MS drivers are often lite versions of the manufacturer's drivers.... allowing the driver to work, but leaving you w/o the control panel which provides access to all the settings.

But again the biggest concern is the ones like the MS Win 10 GFX driver that broke your system if you had two video cards. More frustrating, assuming you could boot into Windows, is the fact that installing the one from the nVidia web site fixed it.... only to find on next boot that WU removed it and broke your system again and again every time you tried it.

On another note .... apparently we are all in danger

Forbes Welcome

Microsoft Marketing chief Chris Capossela explained that users who choose Windows 7 do so “at your own risk, at your own peril”

“We do worry when people are running an operating system that’s 10 years old that the next printer they buy isn’t going to work well, or they buy a new game, they buy Fallout 4, a very popular game, and it doesn’t work on a bunch of older machines,” Capossela stated. “And so, as we are pushing our ISV [Independent Software Vendor] and hardware partners to build great new stuff that takes advantage of Windows 10 that obviously makes the old stuff really bad and not to mention viruses and security problems.”

He also stressed it is “so incredibly important to try to end the fragmentation of the Windows install base” and to get users to a “safer place”.

Incredibly important to his job security perhaps :)

The author goes onto say ....

This phrase – “threat balance” – is telling. Microsoft has been cranking up the pressure on Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to upgrade and, in my opinion, the ‘balance’ was replaced by ‘threat’ a long time ago due to mandatory Windows 10 downloads, automatic upgrade attempts and now Capossela’s claims which add up to nothing more than deliberate misinformation designed to unsettle users.
As I’ve written before, at its core Windows 10 is a very capable operating system with immense promise but it is also overly controlling and I can respect those Windows 7 and Windows 8 users who choose to stay where they are. And this is the part Microsoft has forgotten: technically it keeps giving users a choice, but by enforcing nagging pop-ups, cutting opt-out options and spreading groundless fear for the average user it appears there is no choice at all…

What a bunch of bull biscuits! What peril? So far, the only peril has been from M$py trying to ram Win 10 (worst...malware...ever!) down our throats and sneak spyware onto our Win 7 installations. The only other "peril" would be if M$py reneges on its commitment to provide security updates until Win 7's EOL.

What ten year old OS? Win 7 is barely six years old and still has a lot of life left in her. Look at XP. It did fine for ten years, then did just as fine for the next two years when M$py grudgingly extended its extended support.

He also stressed it is “so incredibly important to try to end the fragmentation of the Windows install base” and to get users to a “safer place”.
And whose fault is it that M$py is having to support three OSes? I lay the blame on Ballsmore and Nutella (and Gates for allowing those two magnificent morons the opportunity to destroy Microsoft).

Yep!.. you are correct, those two morons are trying to butter their old cold toast, know the Windows 10 is a fiasco to deal with. What they should have done....complete a good OS without any updates every three days and "builds" that didn't work, nor anything they tried didn't help those that upgraded. Well!.. what can you expect when they started giving it away "free". and we all should have known...nothing free isn't anything good.

I trust Microsoft way less then the worst used car salesman I ever met when I was at the tender age of 19.

Mega-Corporation Reps Blatantly Lying ...

From Forbes Welcome:
There’s only one problem with Capossela’s statements: they are complete rubbish.
This is yet another example of Mega-Corporation reps blatantly lying to the public (despite the claims about how the trading rules work).

Interesting quote here: Microsoft will not stop pushing Windows 10

   Note
Quote from article linked above

Since Windows 10 follows Microsoft's new "Windows as a Service" paradigm, they are interested in migrating every user to the new Store ecosystem of paid apps, free apps with advertisements and overall reduced control over your PC.

From my viewpoint in Australia I sometimes wonder what exactly is going through the heads of the 'top brass' at MS these days.

I mean, do they have meetings and sit around joking and laughing about the way they're annoying Windows 7 and 8 users with their seemingly nonstop efforts to get them onto Windows 10? Basically trolling their customers, in my opinion.

Or, are they truly deluded and think that they're doing everyone a favour with this behaviour?

As I've mentioned once or twice before - so far I've managed to avoid the W10 upgrade annoyance by not installing any optional or recommended updates for Windows 7 since the start of 2015 (bar a couple which I checked out thoroughly prior to installing them).

And, I have GWX Control Panel and Spybot Anti-Beacon which I check daily to see if anything has 'mysteriously' changed.

But, I am prepared... the day I find Windows 10 trying to install itself on my machines will be the day I do a clean install of Windows 7 in a dual boot with Linux Mint - Windows 7 at Service Pack 1 level only with no Internet access and all my online activities done with Mint.

Microsoft can not make any money giving Win 10 away for free. There will be something for them to make money on. Maybe Ads on every page or it might become a subscription service like MS Office 360. Something is up their sleeve and it is more than their arm.

The Federal Trade Commission wouldn't allow that. Microsoft, can go back to charging for 10 once the free upgrade offer expires but that all they can do. Those that upgraded to windows 10 from windows 7 or 8.1 or even buying windows 10 won't have to worry about windows 10 becoming subscription because it legally can't in the U.S. I am not a lawyer I am basing this on my understanding of U.S. laws & regulations.

If Microsoft wanted to do a subscription based operating system, Microsoft would have to start all over with a new operating system and either call it Windows 365 or Windows 11 but couldn't call it windows 10. Windows 10 would still be supported through its current life cycle.

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 using Dell re-installation disk (Dell sent me one). I also use Free Macrium reflect backup and restore.
Thanks for the welcome. I have been caught by that download once before, and uninstalled it as I did then. There has been a change in its effect, presumably since the New Year. I found that I was unable to get anywhere this time - System Restore had no effect, in spite of trying three different save-points. The only 'quick' way of getting going again was to reinstall KB3035583, whereupon everything worked (though with less speed).

I did have the number down on an 'avoid list' and had stopped automatic updating. But, alas, it was the end of the day, and I didn't check! Why on earth Microsoft is so determined to put our backs up, we may never know. It certainly IS war on Windows 7 - we must all conform to their empire (shades of Chairman Mao). Suppose we all finish up on their semi-tiled system and then they move to tablets only? It will be Linux for me.

But they can. MS is adopting the Google model of selling information collected by using their product. Who is MS selling this data to ?

For one:

https://www.markmonitor.com/

No doubt those organizations whose mission statement involves DMCA such as RIAA and their movie equivalent whose name escapes me at present, will find the tracked information worthy of purchase. They might not use that info to go after users downloading music or movies illegally but where they are downloading them from is a prized bit of information.

Reports Archive - RIAA

Software manufacturers would also pay for information that for example, records how software is used. For example, many software vendors (AutoDesk, Adobe, Intuit, etc.) are moving to "renting" software. Knowing how often and for how long the programs are used would allow a better assessment of you to structure those charges.

The reason, I think, that MS is mum on what lies in the future with regard to how much Windows will cost is they don't know how big the market will be for the information they will collect. And that could be one of the reasons they are attempting to force feed this upgrade on us .... the value of the information is proportional to the sample size.

MS has never been about innovation. They bought DOS and made a big deal to provide it to IBM; that has been the model ever since. Obtain technology by acquisition or imitation. And with that kind of background, watching Google make billions without selling a real product has gotta have made them want to imitate that financial model.

I have been holding off installing KB2999226 and KB3097966 as tho the description says nothing about telemetry or OS upgrades, it is on a lot of folks "Hidden Updates" lists. Anyone care to enlighten me about what are the specific concerns with these updates ?

Just a spoofing update right before Halloween :D
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3097966

This one,
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2999226

Seems like a preparation update for Windows live mail app mostly but not likely exclusive to wlm :/

Key words are these might be Recommended updates but for the most part are Optional depending on your update settings and can be passed on downloading and installing.
About this update

The Windows 10 Universal CRT is a Windows operating system component that enables CRT functionality on the Windows operating system. This update allows Windows desktop applications that depend on the Windows 10 Universal CRT release to run on earlier Windows operating systems.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 creates a dependency on the Universal CRT when applications are built by using the Windows 10 Software Development Kit (SDK). You can install this update on earlier Windows operating systems to enable these applications to run correctly.

Much Thx ...

I did read the descriptions and about 3097966 being related to potential problems related to DLink, but thot that it mighta had something else as it was on a few peeps lists in this thread.

As for the other, being an ole fogey, first thing that comes to mind when I see CRT is Cathode Ray Tube :) .... and yes I still have a 1600 x 1200 Nanao in use that I bought for $2k in early 1990s... at $100 / year ... I have gotten more use per dollar out of it than many LED screens.

Not sure why it wasn't called VCRT (Visual C RunTime) .... I have 16 Visual C Redistributables entries in Programs and Features which were installed by various programs and / or games at one point or another (dated 2005 - 2013) and thot perhaps functionality might be impaired w/o the update. While on the subject .... it never really bothered me as they are rather small.... but is there any reason to keep those old 2005, 2008 Redistributables ? or is it like java whereby every once and a while I uninstall everything and just install the latest one ? My initial impression was that each program / game that installed it, might be tied to that version.
